We went to Orlando Speedworld and got a chance to race the 98 on asphalt. My friends at DAARA set me up with tires and some advice and I hit the track. This was my first time on asphalt and what a difference it makes. The G-Force and speed is dramatic (compared to my experience on dirt). On the third day an old family friend showed up to help me set-up the car. My father had helped him set-up his car and he won two track championships. He was returning the favor. Well on my last track scession I was flying and then BANG. Blew the motor. Connecting rods sticking out of the oil pan. I get to teardown the engine and see what's left.
Well that's racing. I hope to get an engine together for the May 19th date at Kennedale.

Dan, glad you had fun in Florida!! Hated to here you blew your engine, but as they say, that's racing!! We had an idea, you know that a 250ci straight six (like the one in Chads 34 sedan) would bolt up to your trans and they run pretty good too.
Hope you get it going soon!!

Bruce,
I thought about the 6 cyl route but the car has it's success with a V8 and I want to keep that part of the history. In Florida I spent most of my time "racing" with 6 cyl and flathead cars. They were more my speed.
J.D. - yes there is still a sinking feeling... especially for a low budget vintage "racer".

Dan, You would have alot of fun with a "6", but I understand the history of your Dad's car. There are times I would like to run an old Y-Block V8 Ford, but I've come to enjoy the sixes. The flatheads if you go for power are alot more expensive to build than the inlines we run. The most important thing in vintage racing is to keep it as real as possible and to make it FUN with whatever you run!
As they say at CCS "Dig It, It's Dirt!!"

Dan, this is one of our 6 cylinder mods running asphalt and winning the A-main (he also won his heat)!! He blew a hose just as the race completed!! This was the #6 car that Chad drove the last couple of years on dirt at our local tracks. OVSCRA member Bob now has the car in the Tampa area and he is racing it on dirt and asphalt.

I think I have figured out my engine "problem" with a local engine shop.
Here are a few videos of the "racing" that I was doing in Florida. Note: I was in the slowest class:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gqeh0xmr2Y0&feature=email
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJK_v9qglLg&feature=email – Looking out the back
The mount never quited worked as well as I wanted ("Jello like" video at times).

Curious Dan of what you found on the problem?, have had bearings spin, wrist pins fail and lean out a Cyl. and hole in piston , even bent valves.
The wrist pin was the ultimate killer when it let go the #3 rod went out the side of the block put a hole in it big enough to put your hand in, got the crank, all but 2 Rods and the pistons on those rods, broke the cam in 2 pieces, every lifter was either bound up in the block or sitting in valley or just left the motor and both heads were junk ,couple of the chambers looked quite beat up, funny thing is the oil pan only had a couple of places where fragments of rods came down at force and put some small holes in it, remember driver at the time saying she was sure running real well.

JD,
It looks like the timing chain failed and locked-up the crank. Heads are fine... Here is a picture of a few of the cars in one of my heats. This is what the event was about.

Timing Chain, Was it a stock or double roller??, never had any issues with a timing chain yet,but in a motor race or not anything can happen at anytime, if it was a double roller chain , do you know who made it Milodon, Cloyes or a Generic one??. I have a brand new Cloyes double roller chain that i have had for about 5 yrs. now, won the thing in a drawing at a trade show at a race auction we were at and have never used it ,cause we are allowed Gear Drives in our Sprint Class, want to try and use it if I ever build a Sport Mod motor for a wingless class they run around OKC.

The old engine in the 98 was an old street engine that the guy I purchased e car from put in so I could drive the car. It was a double roller timing chain but who knows how old or abused. The new engine will not be a mystery.

How does timing chain failure lock up a crankshaft?

Paul,I would imagine he meant it locked it up after the timing chain failed and as they say "all hell broke loose" in the motor.
Just my guess??

Paul,
What I can see from removing the intake an heads and the large hole in the timing chain cover is that the chain broke and stopped the front of the crankshaft (folded itself up and wedged itself against the water pump when it blew through the timing cover) with the car in gear, at speed, the back part of the crank did not stop. I know from looking down the missing lifter holes that at least the last 4 lobes broke off the cam. There may be another reason but I have not pulled the engine and cannot remove the oil pan.
That's Racing - Even for us vintage folks.

Does anyone think I could tell everone that it was a picture of my victory burnout like the "big boys" do in NASCAR?

Dan, Sounds like to me you broke a Crank and then everything else up on the front end of the motor followed.
Sure on the burnout pic Dan, although an expensive one.
