The pic is very nice and #71 at that, but I have just one question about the pic, noticed that there is not a steering rod running from the Pittman Arm to the Front Axle, Is there???, Maybe it is some trick deal that was back then or on the other side???, figured you could only use one Pittman Arm though???.
But can see PS Pump on front of Motor, so where is the Steering Rod at ???, just kind of curious.
Another thing is the first car I bought had those gold colored steel wheels like on the LR , had about 6 or so of those Steel Wheels and I wish I had them all right now but got rid of them way back when.

Steering rod is rubbing the top of the nerf bar, just under the header. Kinda threw me off too!LOL
I remember those steel wheels, some redneck at Chickasha was determined to fit them up to his 4-wheel drive! We told him they most likely wouldn't fit since they were sprint car six-pin...............but he said he had a torch and a drill, and most likely could make 'em work. I think that was in the fall of 1988.

That car probably ran more races in this area in the 1975-1977 era than any other car. it won the Tulsa modified championship in 1975 and ran with the supers at Dewey and Wichita and won the last 3 NCRA modified races, in 1975 they race about 80 times and I counted about 60 that I was at. We went to the supers in 1976 no championships but al lot of feature wins and top tens at Tulsa Dewey and Wichita both years I know those wheels very good and man they are heavy and hard to change with a 15x15 wheel and drag tire. I changed the gears 7 times in on night at Tulsa. That car had a Lee power steering unit and Chevy pump with quick connections and it leaked all the time. I know every nut, bolt and dent on that car. I could go on and on about that car but do not want to bore everybody. This must have been a play day at Dewey, the car looks too good no mufflers and a Chevy engine. It had a Ford with Gurney Westlake heads in 1976 so this must be '77

Go on and on about this car!
FORD WITH GURNEY WESTLAKE HEADS???!!!!!.................How many economy supermodified organizations have a claim like that? Luv it.
Gurney Westlake heads had a reputation for being tempermental. But nothing beat them when they were right, from what I hear.

At the Tulsa Track you wouldn't want quick steering would you????? I know the action shot is not Dewey, just a question.

This picture is 1976 look at the air box. When you say it is the same car I guess you mean the main frame rail because that is probably the only original part left. The back of the roll cage was raised 4 inches after the '75 season because Mikes had stuck above the it in '75. I know of at least 2 times that the front was bent and the frame was clipped at the firewall, I don't know of how many front axles but not as many as you would think. The rear-end was replaced between the 76/77 season. I liked the old rear better because it had the Hurst Airheart brakes that you could replace the pads without removing the callipers, the new one had Halibrad brakes that you had to take the calliper loose to change the pads. Mike sweep Tulsa one night in '77, Jerry Wilson did not have an engine ready so he loaned Norman the one out of his 25 car. After the sweep somebody asked Jerry how come his engine did not run that fast and he told them very sternly that was his engine in the 71. We just ran the Ford with the Gurney/Westlake heads 2 times,at Dewey on opening night in 1976 and opening night at Tulsa the next night when it burnt a valve. Norman sold the heads to somebody in Collinsvile and I don't know what ever happened to them. We talked before he passed away and he said he wished that he had never sold them because they kept going up in value. I think there were just 100 pair of them made. They really did not work that good on a super, they were made to use 4 Webber 2 barrel carbs to bolt on them and Jerry had to make a manifold for a 4 barrel carb. They also had a narrow power band. The car was painted a different yellow in 77-76. In '75 it was a pale yellow with a brown frame, in 76/77 it was bright yellow with a black frame. I do not remember changing the pitman arm ,Mike ran a huge steering wheel in the car so probably wanted slow steering. I wish I knew how many features that the car one. Mike and Norman spilt for a race or 2 in 77 and Larry Ring drove the car and said man what an engine. Danny McCutchen bought the car after '77 and ran it as a modified and finished 2nd in the standings. I do not know of any car except maybe the Zink car that finished so well is so many races over several seasons. The 1975 Modified championship at Tulsa, Top ten at Dewey and Wichita running with the Supers. 1976 and 77 the Dewey super championship and top tens at Tulsa and Wichita

The light bulb went off over the head and something happened at Wichita that might have to do with the steering. Mike was leading the feature and went to opposite Lock in turn 4 and there was no stop on the steering, the tire rubbed the radius rod and he spun out. I wasn't there, Norman told me about it and said man was Mike mad they almost broke up over that. Glen Mayer put a sop on the steering so that it would not happen again. I do not know if this is why the steering was slowed down or not but is a good tell of one reason why it might be.

Mike Monatoboy took these shots when the outfit came to Lawton
From Mike-
Here are some photos I took when the Norman Gumm team came down to Lawton for modified NCRA races in 1975. We had never seen a rig like this one. What a sight to see.
Sorry I took so long Mike, great shots

I have never been to Lawton but is this picture taken at Enid instead at the last NCRA super race in October of 1975. That is the paint job from 1975 and feature winner stickers from Tulsa on the side of the roof and I am pretty sure that is Bill Humprey in the white pants and blue shirt. At that race Mike started in the mid 20s and finished 8th. I don't mean to be a know it all but I think this was at Enid.

Ray I think you're right. Maybe I read the message wrong.
That front stretch gaurdrail doesn't look like Lawtons now that you mention it.
