This whole situation is really a trickle down fallout effect from the Cali Amigos fracturing the sport and these 2 santioning bodies scrambling for venues, some being more questionable than others. It was one of David Gravel's concerns from the outset, and has come true.

Remember the fencing at "The Ditch' in West Memphis a year or two ago?

Yup. No matter how much everyone is enjoying this, or "how good this is for the sport" it only ends one way....

Were they wide open the whole time?

Yeah, for hotlaps and qualifying. The thing I really remember is during qualifying, standing in T1, all you could hear was the gear drive on the front of the engine screaming.

DG spoke about this on either his own or another podcast early in 2025, before the season began. With 2 national fulltime series fighting for tracks and territory, he said and this is a fairly exact quote, "I just hope we don't have to race at some of these shithole tracks."

Correct. And when Cody was interviewed about upcoming Belleville, he said I hope everyone comes out alive. (not verbatum, but in general) Chances are, everyone comes out alive, but he was trying to make a point.
Sickening how many "fans" are throwing drivers under the bus for voicing their concerns about safety and the lack of an up-to-date catch fence. How about Beaver Dam's decision to keep racing without a catch fence--until Jason Johnson was killed in 2018? How about BAPS and their pit road opening? Wait until Hodnett gets killed and address it? Sick of waiting for something to happen before taking action. There is no reason 410 sprint cars should be racing on a track without an acceptable catch fence, and definitely not on a track banked like this one.
Some say, if it scares you to race these places, no one is forcing you, right? Stay home. Right. That's why the guys said, enough, we're not racing there. I love hearing keyboard warriors throwing drivers under the bus for having no guts. Hilarious.

Then I guess we should expect to see Belleville on the Hi Limit schedule next year right? I mean you are the teller of truth.

I'm going to assume this didn't pop up out of the blue and there is definitely more to this story. If the Outlaws or HL tried to run a show and no one else showed up, they would each have a car count in the mid-teens. If the top Outlaw teams voiced concerns about this, what do you think the non-outlaw drivers were thinking? I'm assuming no one else was coming either, so there's no show.
All speculation but probably some pretty negative backlash from the drivers for a long time and no one else was going to come. I don't blame em.
|
After talking with a friend who knows more than me about the business of sprint car racing, I think you're right.
No "field fillers" would make it a bad show. I guess the Knoxville & Huset's teams are done for the season?
Its not that the drivers are scared, its the promoters who want a good event

So you're gonna blame HL for Outlaws cancelling a show???
Pretty twisted logic.... nobody forced Outlaws to book there, did they?

There have been 4 drivers killed at Belleville since it opened. There have been 7 killed at Eldora since it opened. Maybe they're boycotting the wrong track if they're really that scared.

Nice try but the amount of sprint car races run at Belleville doesn't even compare to the amount run at Eldora it's not even close. But that doesn't fit your narrative.

It's not a narrative, it's only pointing out the absurdity of a horrible excuse to do a last minute cancellation.
There have been 10 sprint car drivers killed in the past 15 years, 6 of those were on tracks smaller than a 1/2 mile.

So should I order tickets for Hi Limit at Belleville next year? Running 410s there is not a good idea what part of that don't you get?

Are you proposing that all of the "scary" tracks should just be shuttered?

Didn't say that I said 410s should not run there now if they want to put up catch fencing sure have at it. That place carries more speed in the turns than probably any other dirt track. To say the drivers are too scared is just dumb. Now answer my question is Hi Limit going to schedule a race there or not? Because I bet they won't and if they don't are you going to call them scared also?

I'm not a fortune teller, so like you, I have no idea if they intend to race there or not. But yeah, if they schedule a race there 10 months in advance and then puss out a few days before after people put in for vacations and book travel, yeah, I'll call it out.

Just wondering, have you ever been to the Salina Highbanks? What are your thoughts on that "scary" place?

Never been there but I've been to Syracuse and the cars were too fast for the track it's a miracle no one get severely hurt or worse. But they were smart enough to quit before someone did. The midget nationals used to run at Belleville then after Clauson they stopped. Did anybody call them too scared? Brad Sweet just retired probably because of concussions do you think he's gonna put his driver's on that track?
