3 Kansas cars and 4 Kansas drivers. A little unbalanced coming from an Oklahoman LOL!

Hom many version of the #6 Willingham colors were there? I remember 3, but the memory is slowing becoming more foggy with the years.

Said my prayer for Randy and his up coming surgery. There is a day that doesn't go by when I see a Jack B Kelly truck and think of Randy Willingham.

Six different paint jobs between 73 and 78, the car is restored with the 74 colors.

These are really great models, I really like Dutch's car.I get inspired when I see other model builders who build race cars that actually ran around this area. Great job.

Is that Bill Cates #58 and Joe Farley's # 750 on previous page and on the other post about Jack B. Kelly Trucking, seen a Tank Truck on Hwy. 412 on way to Enid on Sat. to race and that #6 car came to mind.

JD,

Yes, the #58 is Bill Cates from 1975, did you know this car was the #3 Jack Walker built super owned by Melvin Rogers and driven by Bobby Walker in 1973. They sold the car to Bill Cates after the 1973 season. The #750 is Joe Farley's super, but I made it the Bob Brooks car with Herb's on the hood. Joe sold the car to Bob Brooks after the 1973 season and Bob Brooks just used the same paint job for the 1974 season except for sanding off the lettering when Joe owned the car. Bob Brooks kept the #750 on the car.

I remember Bill had the car with some white numbers and black outline with some brown design on it one season , probably 75 or so?, Bill was just a hard nose racer, likeable and always friendly , his boy ran a Mini Stock out there at Lawton several years back , That Bill King Brake O car of Mclreath , I remember as a kid when I seen it pull onto the track in Turn 4 on a Sat. night that most of the time all the rest of the competitors were running for 2nd place.

I have often wondered what happened to the #3 Melvin owned and Bobby drove. It was one of my favorites and a beauty! The 750 was a great looking car too. Thanks so much for the info. Any idea where these cars are today?

I lost contact with the old Melvin Roger's #3 that Bobby Walker drove in1973 after the 1977 season. Bill Cates here in Lawton owned and drove the car until than. This car is posted on the models I built, It is the blue #58. As far as the #750 Joe Farley car he sold it to Bob Brooks after 1973 and Brooks drove the car until 1976 I think after that I don't know what happened to the car. I hope either of these cars are still around and not crushed in a crusher.

Not sure if it was the same car but did'nt Bob Brooks from Dallas sell his car to Andy Rylant from Temple , Okla. in the late 70's , I think it was , Rylant drove it for a while like Brooks had it painted with #4 on it for the last half of 77 or 78 season, then over the winter changed body like car was when Melvin R. drove it and made it into a inline Modified #20 for a year and then a Super Mod for a year and I guess figured driving was not his deal, he also got another Temple , Ok. guy to get into the Super Mods in the late 70's/early 80's which was Jim Uselton #8 (Crop Duster Pilot) Buddy's Flying Service car, bought a new Barnett car for 79 season I believe , I think Larry Witt bought a new Barnett for Rylant as well and financed the deal for Rylant or could have been a partner deal (Witt and Rylant were friends) , then Witt got to know Ewell from the running at Lawton all the time and the Barnett car deal and that became the Champ Dirt ride/Sponser for Ewell in the early to mid 80's.

I remember Lawton was struggling on Car Counts in Supers and Mods both at that time of the late 70's and then the Champ Dirt Cars came along and they really never took off either and the oil bust and all that was a bad deal and to this day I don't believe Lawton has ever fully recovered to what it once was back then. Just my opinion on that.

Anyway Just wondered if that was not the same car that Rylant ran in 78,79?,#4 with Brooks original paint scheme and #20 inline Cream Colored car (got some pics of it from then with Rylant doing the driving in both of them) and then he ran that Barnett that Witt bought as a Super Mod for a short time and was not doing that well and then that deal was done and Witt and Ewell went on from there for the Champ Dirt Car deal.

After the1979 season I really quit going to the races both here in Lawton and OKC, so I don't know anything after that. That is when racing around here wasn't like it used to be. My opinion of course. It seems like all the Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas drivers I loved to watch retired almost at the same time.

JD,

I know what you mean, those guys gave me the inspiriation to build my models and still doing it today. Going to our Wichita Falls Reunions is just great to keep our sport alive. But we are loosing lots of these guys. I hope you will have fond memories of your current racing as I know you have when you were younger and watched all those greats.I know you will always have one fond memory when you all won one of the last features at OKC last year.

That memory of winning last year at the Fairgrounds will be right at the top in the 23 yrs. of car ownership , lots of em growing up watching those legends race and I have just got to take a night off and make it to one of those reunions at WF . I have several questions would like to ask James Skinner as well as others about things at Lawton during the mid to late 70's.

JD,

You can get lots of questions you have about those days answered at our Racer's Reunion. We had a meeting last month and are going to try to get the next reunion for some time in mid October, before the weather changes. Lots of memories surface to the top when I go to our reunions.

Mike
