I guess the "cloud's silver lining" is the next to last paragraph of the announcement on their .com portal ...
"
NationalSpeedSportNews.com, the online version of the newspaper, will
continue to be updated with daily news, giving Internet savvy readers
the opportunity to keep up with some of the same news they enjoyed every
week.
But as far as the newspaper goes, it’s the end of an era.
"
Still very, very sad to see racing's premiere print rag's demise....

Everybody is not "internet saavy" and everybody does not have a computer, but think about this: Everybody has something in common, and that thing they have in common: is a mailbox!

Sad indeed. I remember waiting for NSSN every week to get my racing fix, NASCAR,WOO and the local stuff was in there too. I still have a mint issue of 1964 Daytona 500 results with a Plymouth 1-2-3 picture on the front cover. Even though I get my "fix" from the computer now, whenever I have a chance to buy NSSN, I buy it. Nothing like it, reading in the rocker with a coffee or beer. Just like the olden days.

There is news going around today that National Speed Sport News has printed their last issue. They have been a staple in racing news for like the last 8 decades. Sad day!
|
I t is a sad day in racing when a staple in racing like NSSN is gone by the way of the computer , or it may have caused its demise . The new generation of fans can't wait they want to read the news even faster then waiting for the racing paper to arrive . But I still get excited when my paper comes weekly , no matter what racing paper came to my mailbox . I look forward to reading the columns more then just the results , as I knew most of the results I wanted to know .
But I tend to think most of the racing papers creativity has gone by the wayside in cutting costs , less photos , less information , it seems to me , that the papers aren't quite the same as they use to be .
Hopefully something will come out that is a step ahead of the old style papers of yesterday , that fans want to read .

i guess they are just taking all the subscribers money and running....what about subscriptions that were paid with no refunds available....must have been just a donation to someone.
|
Hopefully, the NSSN people are more ethical than the SPRINTCAR racing paper people were years ago. They came to Florida during Speedweeks selling subscriptions, went back home and delivered two or three papers before they went belly-up. They had to know they weren't going to make it and just ripped off subscribers to pay for a Florida racing vacation. No refund from those XXXXers.
....Opperman forever!

I always looked forward to Thursday afternoon growing up. As soon as I got off the bus I would run to get my racing paper. If I couldn't get someone to answer the phone at the track the Outlaws were running, I'd have to wait days to get the results. Now we have Dirtvision. I don't know which I like better though.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

NSSN, unfortunately, has become an anachronism. It's part of a niche in print media, and anybody who reads a bit has seen the stories about the challenges that ALL print media is facing, not just NSSN. When way too many people expect FREE live streaing of events over the internet, as well as televised racing events,. well, it was just a matter of time until the print edition of NSSN passed away.
Having been a subscriber for over 40 years, I'll miss the paper. But maybe the time has come for its passing. But I think that the last nail was put in its coffin when Chris Economaki quit writing his column this year - check out the last several issues. His name is not on the "Editor's Notebook". While I'm sure that his team tries hard, I just don't think that they had the sources and contacts that Chris has/had throughout the industry. It just wasn't the same - and , like it or not, the rest of the stuff in the paper was readily available over the internet.
As far as any money lost on a subscription, well, I'm still waiting for a refund from my Open Wheel, Stock Car Racing, and Circle Track magazine subscriptions. I just consider the money spent an investment in the sport that I love so much.
So long, Chris and Corinne, and NSSN - thanks for everything!
Chuck.....

Im completly broken hearted to hear this. I sold Speed Sport, Speedway Illustrted, and Marc Times as a young man at the Heidelburgh Raceway and have continued to be a reader/subscriber to this day. Chris always had the inside story beforew anyone else due too his extensive network of connections. It istruly a sad day in motorsports. Many many thanks to Chris, Corrine and the many other writers, contributers and photographers that have brought me so many hours of reading and entertainment. THANX FOR THE MEMORIES...

Has anyone answered this question? What if you just started your subscription?

It's a sad day to see NSSN go. Inevitable but sad. I have nothing but the highest regard for Mr. Economaki.
I believe it was Monday afternoons when I'd race off the schoolbus and run to the mailbox. Nothing better than tearing into your NSSN to see all the sprint car pictures and recaps. All kinds of racing but I loved the sprints.
OK. Just had a thought. Why did so many people jump on the "Save Manzanita" bandwagon after it was too late but didn't go to the races there? OKC... how many tracks are gone? Most wouldn't be gone if people supported them.
Now we have a "Save NSSN" from a bunch of people that likely don't buy single issues at the track or subscribe.
If it's important to you... patronize their establish or buy their products NOW instead of LATER.
No axe to grind but it just strikes me as odd how people react to news like this.
Thanks again, Mr. Economaki, for many wonderful years of supporting racing.

Like Some Guy says, people need to quitcherbitchin about US made products. T-shirts? What about the Levi's or Wrangler's that almost everyone wears? His tennis shoes? I've been spouting this global economy stuff for years.
High costs(labor, land, taxes) are the things that drive corporations to seek lower costs of production so that they can return a decent amount of $$$ to shareholders in the form of dividends and increased stock price.
And since when does anyone complain about making money on stock?

On many of the forums people are asking about a refund. My thought, is for you to keep what I had left as a thank you for 35 plus years of race reporting for me. Until the internet became available, there was no place in South Dakota to get national and international weekly race coverage except from NSSN. Thanks to the Economaki”s and the rest of the columists that gave their perspectives over the years. It was a good ride.

This is absolutely true!!!! And, at some point in history, not everyone had a car. Some folks insisted on riding a horse.
It just might be time to get caught up with the current program. Ya think?
And, yes, I still enjoy holding the paper in my hands but also appreciate the daily updates at NSSN olnline and Facebook too!

I'll miss my Speedsport mornings if you know what I mean...sadly the print media is struggling all over the country with all media types.
Hell even the US Post Office is bleeding cash and looking to close unprofitable locations, mostly in rural areas, where they need it the most!!!
As for my lost subscription money, keep it Mr. Economacki, consider it a bailout...thanks for the great reading!

I was thinking of a lengthy ' good bye ol' friend of 30 years' reply but Dave Argabright's column said it better than I ever could (and likely better than anyone - as always).
The Post Office must have heard the news and felt guilty - I received the last edition in 2 days. It's been 20 some years since that has happened.
The internet is great but a paper is still better.
Good bye ol' trusty friend!

You beat me to it.......just got the final NSSN today....thought it was ironic that it came 3-7 days earlier than any issue for a looooong time.

As a NSSN subscriber for around 50 years, I feel as though I'm losing a long-time friend.
Yes the post office has been no friend of NSSN as it wasn't unusual for me to receive the paper a week to ten days after it had been published. Ironically I received the last issue this past Saturday, almost record time.
The high point of my NSSN reading was Chris Economaki's weekly column as it always contained a wealth of inside information not available elsewhere.
As for a refund, forget it. I'll consider it money well spent as I grieve over the demise of NSSN
