With the new format in place and the elimination of provisionals basically (no points) I pose this question:  Who exactly is the main tech person for the WoO sprint car series?  With qualifying being of the utmost importance what is to keep any of the competition from running big motors, fudging a bit on the fuel, possibly spraying air filters with "juice" before qualifying, checking transponders (no one would ever cheat there, would they?) and other items?  With that question out there, can anyone confirm/deny that there actually is a person in place and if there is, has anthing been done to police some of these possible issues?  Before anyone jumps down my throat for even bringing this up and says "there is too much on the line to get caught cheating," let me remind you of certain cars that were found to be WAY OFF in just the past 3-4 years.  Heck, one of them literally disenigrated one night in Iowa and I believe another PA based team ran the same cars.  Just a subject I thought I'd toss around.

Would have been nice if they checked some cars at the Winter Heat.

Question for Johnny, If the heats are lined straight up by qualfying why is it if the outside front

row starter jumps (Sammy at Tulare) they move the 4th car in the line up (Croft) up to the front row

& not the 3rd starter (Hirst)?  Why should Croft benifit when Hirst out qualified him?

Not sure I've ever seen a sprint car race where they cross drivers from rows on a penalized start, so I'm going to guess just tradition?   Interesting question though. (That would also mean that the offending driver would only be penalized one position instead of two.  So IF that were the case, if the pole sitter jumped the start, would he be moved to the outside of the front row?)

If pole sitter jumps move him to 3rd. Let outside pole choose top or bottom and put 3rd starter

on front row.

So who does tech the WoO sprints?

4 responses no answers. I say no one has the balls to tech the cars and keep them honest. Who would have a pair to fail Schatz?

And before you jump me and say he never would cheat how do we know? Why because he never got caught is a bad answer if the teching  is sub part and lacks teeth.

Remember racing is entertainment and the racers are to put on a show.  Make a good show collect the money and roll on down the high way and look good in your WoO official gear.

Feel free to bring a car to any World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event. Easy way to meet the tech inspector.

Several years ago it was Rick Ferkel. I watched him make the top 3 pull off heads one night. Third wasn't an Outlaw regular. Oh, and they were all three legal, too.

Our car was tech'd in Vegas. A tech sticker is applied the your chassis, showing the chassis meets the requirements, as well as components such as, tethers, axles, wing placement(front),drag link, wheel cover hardware, etc, etc. They continue to check cars during the tour. So I am sure that somebody out there is slipping something past somebody, but it isn't obvious.

While racing with my son, the starter would decide if the start was good, if not, a yellow was thrown instantly, they would reline up for one last chance. If they jumped again, the pair were sent to the tail. I very seldom saw it take more than one restart, as it was a stiff penalty. Wish they did it in sprinters too.

Still not an answer to the original reason for this topic.

I am not saying Schatz is cheating just used his name for an example since he is the man in the Outlaws.

But when was the last time fuel was checked or tires for being chemically altered or juicing air filters. Just to keep everyone honest and the integrity of the Outlaws.

Can anyone even remember the last time anyone got caught for anything in the WoO sprints?

Does that prove no one cheats or not very strict enforcement?

There should be no reason to tech WoO engines. They should be unlimited.

They should just have to tech the tires and wing angle when they roll across the scales.

I'll never understand why fans obsess so much over these things. They way I see it, I get enjoyment out of going to the races whether or not the guy who won "cheated". I have no skin in the game and I got my moneys worth so why should I care if Donny is cheating (I don't think for one second that he is) if Daryn, Shane and all the others don't? I'm just a fan so I'll leave all this shit up to the teams and the officials and enjoy my time at the races. Life is too short to spend it worrying about things that don't affect me.

Schatz does pretty good at the Knoxville Nationals. After the Saturday A main you can come down to the pits and watch the top finishers being teched behind victory lane. Stand at the fence by the scales and see what they check and who does it. Donny has always passed.

A few years ago, I heard the Outlaws might not have enough cars to make a full field at the Charlotte May race, so I threw my 360 together real quick.  While I was at the drivers meeting, they were inspecting my car.  When I came back, I walked into the trailer and looked across the road.  There were about eight outlaw officials talking to each other and staring at me.  Finally, it looked like one of them got the courage to come tell me I wouldn't be allowed to race because I had to many violatons, improper this and that.  I told them no problem, I was just hear to help make sure ya'll had a full field which they did.  One of the top guys came by and gave us our pit pass money back and told us we were more than welcome to hangout in the pits and thanked us for being understanding.

I don't remember now which track I was at in Minnesota, but after the WOO race the top three cars were all pushed to the finish line area for driver interviews, photos, etc.  I went out onto the track instead of heading to the pits and noticed a WOO official drawing fuel from one of the cars.  Talked to him a few minutes and he told me the do a fuel check immediately after the race on the top three cars (maybe more) to check for illegal additives.  I know at the Nationals in Knoxville they do a pretty complete motor check on the top cars(I've watched for short periods, but looked like they pulled the heads off).  I don't think they do that at many tracks, but I do believe they do a pretty good job.  The series that I am most familiar with seem to do a pretty good tech inspection before the season starts and then do more moderate spot checks during the season.

To answer to the best of my limited ability, as we only do most of te California swing, I mentioned before the chassis check, which goes so far to make sure nobody is running a thinwall chassis, and verious lightweight components. I seldom see a hood come off an outlaws teams car after hotlaps, before qualify, so wetting a filter is probably not happening. As far as a big motor, when the 15 car doesn't make the field at a locked down track, he probably isnt running a big motor, or he forgot to install it that day. Regarding tires, most of these guys are getting them mounted, out in the open, and you simply change the tire for size option so rapidly, that a softening compound would be difficult to use effectivley. You don't normally smell a difference when cars are running at the outlaws, but I have certainly smelled some real funny fuel burning before, even at the Winterheat  races. So in a nutshell, I think for the most part, its all on the up and up. Frankly, the biggest way to gain an advantage, would be an electronic traction control, and I would not bet against that. But here is no reason to start asking if there are people cheating, and if there are people checking for it, as if most of the guys running against the outlaws really felt something was up, they wouldn't field a car against them. I certainly wouldn't. On average, the performance difference is that they run that much more, with top equipment, and race on many more conditions than most locals ever see. Just my 2 cents.
