Here's a list of those I know who built cars in the '60s-'70s-'80s, add or correct please-

 

Edmunds, Nance, Parson,Walker,Grice,Jelly,CAE,Grant King(1),Gilmore,Howerton, Beck,Stanton/Challenger, Gambler,McClelland,Barnett,Jack Rich, George Armstrong(?),Denny Moore,Hank Malone,Jim Bean(B&T). Anybody I miss?

Maxim , J & J started in the 80's , J & J still built 100" cars in the 80's and also Maxim started in 88 I believe building Sprint Cars, Not sure Armstrong built cars Brian , I know he bought a Barnett car back in the early 80's when B. Ewell and Barnett were at the Devils Bowl shop out front building cars , Armstrong , Bob Waller were a couple from th e Tulsa area to buy a Barney. Also Competitin Welding as well as Tognotti built Super Modifieds in the 70's and 80's Cometition Welding in the Midwest, Indiana , Ohio area and Tognotti in the California area , Mike Sargent ran those cars as well as Bob Ream came to OKC one year if I remember in a Tognotti car and then he went to Stanton cars as him and Ewell both had the Stanton frames in the late 70's that were Identical as well as David Flanagan from the Dallas metro area had a exact car to Bob Ewell's car only difference was Bob was #18 and Flanagan was #81. One other note Gambler no longer builds chassis as I found this out last year when I had bought a non downtube Gambler sprint chassis at a auction and was going to get some rear arms for it and possibly race it and called Gambler and they only make Torsion Bars and a few other small parts for sprint cars, they are now building Gambler Choppers ,Custom Choppers , guy said they could make more $$$ money on one custom Chopper than building 2 or 3 sprint car frames. Was surprised but I guess that is the sign of the times, He was nice enough to mail me set up sheets and measurements sheets of the 1999 Gambler Frame that I had , like Laverne Nance once told us up at his shop in Wichita back in 77 or 78 , Your not gonna get rich at this , ya just try to make a livin at it and survive. By the way sold that Gambler sprint car to a guy up in Northern Kansas running a 305 , Sure miss all the non down tube cars , But still got my 1998 non down tube Stealth which when I am done racing competitively , It is my restoration project.

Mario Fuentes? I didn't know Tognotti built a super. Who had one?

They built Supers that ran out in Southern California, Mike Sargent ran them (hot shoe out there back in the eighties) , had an article on them in and early to mid eighties Openwheel Magazine and I seen the one Bob Ream ran at OKC before he ran Stanton chassis, I remember the sticker on the car Tognotti Engineering and ask someone who was helping him on the car and he said it was built by Tognotti , never seen another one in person, but they did have that article in Openwheel Mag on California Super Modifieds had pics with the duck tails and square tails . Mario Fuentes just drove and I think just helped the guys name who built them was McDaniels , Called McDaniels race cars which eventually became what is known now as Avenger chassis, I remember Buddy Jackson of Marlow,Ok. and someone else cannot remember there name had a McDaniels chassis back then Buddy won a few features at Lawton with it , I also thought that McDaniel got into some type of trouble with transporting chromoly tubing over the US/Mexico border breaking some type of import law and that is when someone bought his machinery and stuff and started Avenger chassis which is still located in El Paso, Tx.

I also remember this car and the sticker it was silver with black and red lettering and highlites. I also remember the article in the magazine. I'm not for sure but I believe that the TOGNOTTI's were really built as USAC cars with 96" wheelbase but with a little work you could convert to 100" wheelbase pretty easy.

I know back in the early 90's a guy in OKC had a car that ran at OKC on the 1/4 mile , it was a chassis built back in Indiana , Ohio or somewhere in that area , it was a USAC car 96" wheelbase and to make it a 100" car he had to move the rearend back 2 1/2" and the front axle foward a 1 1/2" to get it to 100" wheelbase , I think the axle even rubbed a little on the pan hard bar bolt ,but gave it the 100" wheelbase it needed , trouble was by moving the rearend back , you could no longer change gears in the quick change rear without moving it foward , could not get the cover off,it would hit the front of the torsion tubes. Tough deal and not sure what happened to it , I think they ran it once or twice and then it never ran again.

Yes Brian it could have been an OZ car , he drove it on the 1/4 mile at SFS back in the early 90's and got to hanging out with the wrong people and got into some trouble with the authorities and went to the pen for a while , guess he is out now as I seen him and his boy walking through the grandstands back in July on several Friday nights. I would think you would know who the guy is.
