Long time Crew Chief, Engine Builder, Fabricator, and TIG Welder Chuck Butler passed away in his sleep at his home Friday. Chuck had suffered a stroke a year ago. Butler worked as Crew Chief for the late Jeff Sykes. Sykes lost his life at Tulsa Speedway in the mid 1970s in a bad crash during the start of the Super Modified Feature. Sykes worked for Arrow Speed Warehouse after leaving Creitz and Farley Speed Shop on Peoria Avenue. Butler was the tuner for Jerry Dixon's A Gas Kawasaki Drag Bike in the late 70s. The motorcycle featured a Sandy Kosman Chassis, and new to the sport mechanical pump driven Hilborn Injectors. Butler also provided some great traction compound powder, similar to that used by Sox and Martin, from Lyle Marsh, Marsh Racing Tires out of Siloam Springs, Arkansas which helped to set three IDBA and AHRA Dragbike records. Lyle Marsh is the person that pioneered the wheel/tire bead lock system in use today. Most recently Chuck worked as an engine builder and fabricator of racing components out of Garry Baheler's Performance Vehicle Services shop in Tulsa, supporting the Rogers Lake AMA Dirttrack Team, from San Jose, California. Butler, Chuck, 59, died Friday. Survived by his sister Susan. Services pending @ Ninde Brookside
