Perhaps someone could verify my memory. Several years ago while visiting the Salt Lake City Zoo I noticed the Nance logo on the engine of a mini railroad used to give rides around the zoo. I pointed out to my wife that there was a plate on the engine that said it was made by Nance of Wichita, Kansas. Same Nance?

Chance MFG. built amusment rides etc in Wichita. I'll bet Nance sub-contracted to Chance for Machine work etc. Chance was one of the biggest amusement ride builders in the world I believe. That is just my take on it. I'm sure someone will have the real answer. I think in the early years Nance was not just into racing. I think it was Nance Manfacturing or something like that.

It wasn't a waste of space it was very good question.
The LaVern Nance Story http://www.racingfromthepast.com/lavernnancestory.html This was probably written for the Hall of Fame inductions and not by myself. I'm not sure who to give credit. One of the Nance Grandkids sent the story to me.
Here is a paragraph from it. "Financially successful, yet restless for some new challenge, Nance quit his job and launched his own small business (Nance Machine & Paint Company) with partner Marvell in 1950, fabricating glider seats and painting parts. Marvell ran a lathe with one hand and painted parts with the other. She also took care of the company books and, at night, took care of the four Nance children. LaVern worked at her side and scoured the Wichita aircraft plants, including Cessna, Beech, Gates Learjet and Boeing, looking for contracts to keep his fledgling company alive."
I'll bet you can include scouring Chance Manufacturing to that list.

I seen somewhere on the Internet that you lived in Guthrie, OK. I guess I thought you lived in Oregon, Utah or Idaho out there somewhere.

We moved here to OK from Utah the middle of last year. It seems the economy just fell out under us. I lost my job in Dec. 09 due to economic changes, My wife's division (where she worked over 5 years) all but closed and she lost her employment in 2010. We decided to sell our home and move nearer my mother and near our son here in OK. Thought I would get to see some great OKC racing but they do not race there now. My brother lives in Oregon.

I feel bad about the possible error on my part. Perhaps my memory is a bit tweaked and maby it was Chance ? I remember for sure the company was from Wichita. That was about 10 years ago. I do remember race cars dancing in my head when I saw the manufacturers label. Well - I didn't think I had Old Timers Illness. LOL

I haven't found a Chance Mfg. logo yet. Chance also owned a company in IN that actually built these trains. I can remember seeing the logo at the state fair hundreds of times but can't pull the picture of the logo out of my mind. Chance use to be at the corner of Kellogg and West street in Wichita. On the SW corner. I beleive they built a new plant in Park City But I'm not sure.
It seems like the logo did have a capital C followed by little letters and and arrow.

I broke down and emailed the SLC Zoo. I hope to hear from them today. This would settle the question. Keep your fingers crossed. I find though that I have learned alot of answers to good questions I would not have asked yet. Very interesting stuff.

You've done did it know! I'm stuck on this topic and I watched a couple dozen YouTube miniature ride video trying to see a logo. I have wore the Google machine out looking. Chance was one of the biggies in the amusement ride industry. The Toboggan. the Twister The Zipper are just a few rides everyone my age should remember.
Harold Chance, founder of Chance Rides Manufacturing Inc., died Saturday. He was 88 years old.
Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 861 N. Socora, according to an employee at the company. Arrangements are being handled by Resthaven Mortuary, 330 S. Tyler.
Chance retired from business in the mid-1980s. Ownership of the company, which builds amusement park rides, stayed in the family.
It first passed on to his son, Richard, and later to grandson, Michael.
The company’s named changed in 2002 from Chance Industries to Chance Rides Manufacturing as part of a bankruptcy reorganization plan.

I received a reply from the SLC Zoo and was told the train was built by Chance Mfg. of Wichita, Ks.
I feel a bit bad that I started this with misinformation but because of that I have learned tons about Nance and Chance that I did not know before. Perhaps my mind saw Nance when it said Chance. I apologize for any waste of time but now I know much more. Thanks for your patience.
My condolences to the Chance family ---

Chance & Nance & Wichita, KS; It would only happen to a race fan from Kansas probably or a real sprint car fan.
