I happen to run into a couple of photos of a pileup in Dodge City back in 1959 - No one hurt I believe. 2 of the photos were taken by a professional photographer from Dodge. He brought them to the track and sold them. Dad's #24 was damaged in this wreck although it is not shown. Recognize any other drivers? I know that this is old stuff but it is stuff that relates to the start of my dad's racing career as an owner / builder.

Those bottom pictures make me think he mighta oughta left the car that way to corner better.
I mean, ya know sometimes a wreck changes a cars handling for the better.

There's something about that lower left shot that really appeals to me. Almost makes you want to make a poster out of it. Call it "Sunday Morning". just thinking.........

Yeh! I guess that Sunday morning could have been better. 24 did finish 5th. in points for Merrick Promotions that year (1959). Perhaps it gave dad the excuse make some positive changes. Then next year (1960) they were leading in Merrick Racing Promotions points but got squeeked out because of a broken driveshaft before the last feature race and made 2nd. in points that season. Johnny McGee drove for dad in 1960.

Johnny McGee was from Wichita and raced there before moving to Dodge City in the late 1950s. He was a top shoe and passed away not all that many years ago.

I did not know that he passed away. I did a people search and found 2 addresses for a Johnny McGee in Dodge City. It was one of those searches that expect you to pay for info. I did not persue it. I checked the SSDI and did not find any Johnny McGees from Kansas. There were a bunch though elseware. The attached photo was taken by my mother in 1960 at the Merrick Racing Promotions Dodge City banquet the year we were 2nd. in points. The photos shows Johnny McGee, A lovely lady and my dad, Vernon Schrater.

Just a note as the the 2nd. photo. The #14 sedan driven by Ferrill Curtis was my dad's first car. It sort of became Ferrill's car when dad purchased #24. The car was not damaged in the wreck. Ferrill did finish 2nd. in owner's points in 1959. I don't know why he is not listed in drivers points. That year Bernie Beydler came in 7th. in driver's points with 24.
