HAROLD LEEP JR. MEMORIAL
MAY 16-17
OKLAHOMA SPORTS PARK- ADA, OKLAHOMA

Our main day will be on a Sunday (May 17, from 12p-6p). Saturday night(May 17) will be for an exhibiton run and it is planned at this time to have the open trailered teams pitted on the infield for the lack of room in the pits, and of course -eye candy for the fans. I was looking at old programs from Ada the other night and I was surprised to find that town has an extensive history with 6 cylinder modifieds. Quite a few local people will know what it is we are driving! Pit passes will be the usual , around $25-but there is a good chance of a promotional deal there, we'll have to see.
OSP is a 3/8ths mile track with a nice surface run by a 6 cylinder alumni from the 70's. He is an old fan just like us. I have been there, I can tell you it looks good.

Cars to be allowed-
All 96"-100" cars- upright ,open wheel, will be allowed. It is highly recommended that these cars be close to period correct,(but if you throw a ducktail on a newer version, that'll be cool). We base these allowances due to the availability in the area.
Shorter wheelbase super/modifieds before 1980 allowed
Coupes/sedans up to 1948, from the earlier eras will be greatly welcome as well.
Vintage/classic sprints, midgets up to 1980 are allowed.
Special exceptions may apply, but we'll have to keep the event cohesive to these parameters.

Keep in mind that these tracks are aware that there is no purse to run for, thus expenses being kept down will be in mind. Motel rates at a discount are very possible, yet that issue will be addressed in the spring.
These events are being planned based on the needs and wants from the people as a whole, thus if it seems a little loose, that's because your neighbor needed a little leeway. We are doing this to have fun and to mingle. The goal is to have the kind of car show WE want. On dirt of course!

For those of us that are do-it yourselfers, here's a neat guide to notching tubing without a joint-jigger. This uses the chop saw or band saw method. Done right, the results are pretty close.

A few notes about the restoration award class-
1. I will not compete here due to conflict of interest. That's cool since my cars won't be as nice as the ones that do show up. But a balanced eye will be kept on that area of the show since it is where competition is allowed.
2. A fair, honest, knlowledgeable judge will be sought to handle a big part of deciding who will win that award.
3. In an effort to avoid sending this class towards the 'trailer queen' epidemic, cars will have to be functional . Should a few laps be part of the effort to win the award, consistency and reliability will be far more important than speed. I like the idea of at least 4 laps (alone) to show form and function for a multitude of reasons I won't go into here.
4. Keep in mind we don't know if the judge is going to base his decisions on his liking for chrome or not. I like chrome just as much as the next guy, yet the judge might be one who remembers when there wasn't as much chrome. The best bet in the long run is to try to keep things sensible. Read where this class is going. We don't want to price the little guy out.
5. The cars history COULD play a part in it's ability to compete here as well.
As we get closer the guidelines will get clearer, and fair.

There have been a few that have been assuming this is going to be a race. Let me be clear- THE MAJORITY OF THE CAR OWNERS WILL NOT SUPPORT AN EVENT IF THERE IS GOING TO BE A RACE. NOR AM I AT THIS TIME PURSUING ANY KIND OF ON TRACK RACING WITH THESE CARS. I am only a messenger for the majority, trust is important, and my name is on this thing,
Those of you wanting to race need to keep in mind- IF YOU WANT A RACE IN THE FUTURE, HELPING US TO REBUILD AND PROMOTE THE POPULARITY OF THESE CARS WILL BE BENEFICIAL TO MAKING THAT CASE IN THE FUTURE. Who is gonna care, if ya don't show up?
There are simply too many cars to risk under battle conditions at this time. Wheel to wheel at close to top speeds is going to be considered as racing. Nunnadat
However, don't expect this to be a twinkletoes puddlehop contest either. Common sense is the rule.

A view of turn one at Oklahoma Sports Park. It is much wider than it looks.

This is off of turn 2, the transition sweeps out and then eases back into turn 3. Almost acts like it is a "D", but still an oval.

The pit area on the infield. This is just a partial picture but there is a lot of room there for us and there are a lot of barriers between here and the outside. Currently OSP has a lot of guardrailing that they plan to place around the infield for insurance purposes.

See that building on the hill? It is huge! I got a tour in there as well, it has a lot of space. It would be good to keep it in mind in the event of a swap meet and a place to park the cars in the event of (God forbid)rain.

Next week I intend to get pictures from Texoma Motor Speedway in Wichita Falls, TX.
I have talked with the promoters of these tracks several times and have found them to be old fans of these cars and with a clear understanding of what is needed in order for the majority of the cars to show up. Things have been consistent and stable without any drama. I can assure you the atmosphere will be positive for us to have some fun.

Let's just say that there were differences in opinions as to how the show needed to be carried out.
There is a lot of room inside that building.

Here is a car we wish to bring in. Jiggs Founds of Amarillo is proving that craftsmanship could be in that towns water.

Day by day things are getting better on the planning of the vintage shows here. Some good things are bubbling, yet it is too soon to talk about them right now.
For more pictures of Jiggs Founds restoration in progress, look in the "Whatever happened to" post.

Also, for those concerned about my lack of experience in this arena-
The braintrust has been growing and it is very knowledgeable out there. I REALLY appreciate the solid advice you guys have been giving me. Some of you have been getting a lot of calls from me, I tend to be a nuscience(?). Across the board we're looking really good. And of course there are several of you guys that I need to call still.
Thank you for putting up with this clown!

Just got back from Wichita Falls. Lotta stuff going on down there and it's good. Here's a car that until recently was owned by Stanley Cothren of Lawton. This car was so similar to Harold Lindsey's first 6 cyl. car and since the price was right, Harold just had to have it. Yep she runs, sounds good too.
