Scoring the "double" is when you get in two races at two different tracks in one day, according to an editorial in sprint/midget magazine Flat Out by Bob Mays.

Apparently many people have done it, but I don't know how its possible unless one is an afternoon race (a rarity today) and the other a night race, but this article talked about races both at night. Seems impossible, but he listed several tracks (two tracks in close proximity) where its been done. I've never done it but there must be a few of you out there who have.

OR, are there still a lot of afternoon races these days?

They were easy to do in Pennsylvania years ago when I used to go there a lot. Silver Springs (RIP) to Lincoln,Williams Grove to Susky,Susky to the Grove,Port Royal to Selinsgrove,Susky to Penn National,Port Royal to Silver Springs are some I remember.

This year I did 2 doubles, one in Indiana from the Speedrome to Lincoln Park (Some came from Eldora to Lincoln Park that night) after Lincoln Park was having a late night with a lot of racing on the program.

2nd one was from Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville Illinois for POWRI midgets, then up to Tri City Speedway in Pontoon Beach Illinois, exactly 1/2 hrs drive to catch the final for the Gold Crown USAC midget race.

Copper World at PIR during the day, sprints at Manzi at night was always a fun day. As for 2 at night, years ago I went to Marysville (ca) and the car count was horrible so I bailed after the heat race and went to Placerville.

Ahh--the good old double. Hadn't done in for a while until this past October: USAC at Terre Haute (A-main finished by 9:18 pm), followed by a 3 hour drive to Tri-City, IL in time to see BOTH the B and A-mains. (The time zone change and the fact that there were 4 or 5 support classes at Tri-City helped.)

I know several people who have done a "triple", and I believe Guy Smith of Area Auto Racing News got a "Home Run" (4 races in one day) once in Indiana (starting with the Indy 500).

Speaking of Guy Smith, he was part of a back-to-back double for me (and double to triple for him) in the late 1980's: We did USAC sprints at Lawrenceburg on a Saturday night, and made it to Florence, KY in time to see the STARS late model A-main, then on Sunday I did Jennerstown ISMA supers, followed by late models at Motordrome 70 speedway. Guy (and if I'm not mistaken Kevin Eckert as well) did the Jennerstown-Susquehana-Penn National triple that Sunday.

An easy one for us every year is the Indy 500 in the afternoon and Kokomo at night on the way home. Of course we've already done the Little 500 Saturday night.

I've never watched 2 races in one night, but several years ago I was driving a sprint car at Thunderhill in Mayetta, KS and we had a rain delay. On the south side of town Heartland Park Topeka was not affected by the rain. Many of the modified and street stock guys high tailed it to Mayetta after HPT finished and got signed in before the heat races and proceeded to race twice in the same night. I was a pretty cool to see the train of trailers rolling in just in time to unload, fuel their cars and get out for heat races.

Back around 2002 and 2003 on the old half mile track at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Spencer Iowa, they would run an afternoon race during the fair (now the World of Outlaws event). There was also a sprint car special in Madison SD, around a 3 hour drive, where some racers (Tom Platt and Shawn Van Wyhe) and many fans would do the double.

I did exactly that at manzy but it was trucks on Friday at PIR. manzy WoO Friday night . Busch sat at PIR . WoO sat night manzy .Sunday cup race then back home to so cal. But back to the double .dont know if it counts but I've seen Larson win two diff classes the same night .and I believe he won all three divisions at Eldora last year in the same night.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

I've gone to a Saturday morning Super Modified show @ Altamont (1/2 mile paved), and then San Jose Speedway (1/3 mile dirt) that same night to watch 410 sprintcars. Davey Hamolton won the super modified show and Pat Rose won the sprintcar show. I think it was 1990 or 91.

I have also seen races at Laguna Seca on Friday's and Saturday"s and have gone to Watsonville (fri) and San Jose (sat) Speedway's on the same day.

Back in either 2000 or 2001 we did 5 races in 3 days in Charlotte: ARCA race Thursday day, Outlaws at the Dirt Track Thursday night, Busch Race Friday, Outlaws Friday night, and finally the Coca Cola 600 Saturday afternoon and night. Had a blast!!!

For me it's all about taking pictures. Shoot hot laps at one place then zip for another. Most times starting with a pavement track that begins hot laps earlier in the afternoon then to a dirt track at night. Have hit Toledo many times and went to Attica later and have gotten photos of four different open wheel classes.
The craziest was probably Eldora and Butler in Michigan. Have also done Winchester & Kokomo several times, Eldora & Gas City, Limaland & Gas City, Baer Field & Butler, Angola & Butler and who knows what else. Used to make Pa. trips where I hit Silver Spring in the afternoon and Selinsgrove at night.

I don't remember the details but in the early 90's Danny Young raced a 360 at the fairgrounds in Des Moines and a 410 in a WoO show at Knoxville the same night by way of a helicopter. I think they held up the Knoxville feature a few minutes to accomidate him. Cool deal.

Only have two in my life, Spencer Iowa, old track, in the day, Huset's in South Dakota at night with plenty of time to spare. Also did a Greenwood Ne sprint show and then to Eagle Ne for the B and A of the sprints. Don't remember the year.

In years past it was possible to hit I69's Friday night show and then boogie over to Eldora for the Dream or World 100 last chance qualifiers they held after time trial night. A change to the format for 2013 will either eliminate this option or increase the # of races you can catch after I69.

If you are talking about driving at 2 tracks in the same day, I've only done it once. ASCS Rocky Mountain Region did it in 2004. Dodge City KS Raceway Park in the afternoon - Jetmore that evening. The tracks are about 45 minutes away from each other. I think Randi Miller won them both, but cant say for sure. Unfortunately when ASCS redid their website, the stats for all the old regions are gone now......

a few years back, weather was in the area on Saturday night of the WoO swing thru PA...they ran the Grove on Thurs / Friday and were scheduled for Hagerstown on Sat.

we opted for Lincoln on Sat. and they pushed to get the show completed before sundown leaving us the option to fly across route 30 to 81 and south to Hagerstwon which was still repairing the track from a downpour.

Walked in just in time to hear the tower screw the latemodels right off the card after wheel packing the track and were treated to the most dangerous "non sliding" slide job by Sammy as he nearly put Dollansky into the next time zone thru 3 dn 4 for the lead / win.

left the house for Lincoln around 5 pm...and got home around 4:30 am after dropping off the VIP members who took the daily double challenge and rode along with me.

and yes hosehead message board veterans...this was in fact the same weekend that MSPN had the meltdown in the VIP section Friday as Kinser won...and answered the phone near Buffalo, on his way home to Canada when I called him on sat to see if he was pimping photos at Hagerstown.

wish I had the BRR report from this histerical weekend handy to post just for kicks...

Lincoln 1845 ft/.35 mile T1=118MPH
Eldora 2287 ft/.43mile T3=135MPH
Port 2716 ft/.51 mile T3=TBD
Grove 2792 ft/.53 mile T3=135MPH
Selinsgrove 2847 ft/.54 mile T1=136MPH

I did a Syracuse Mile (New York State Fair Speedway) World of Outlaws show in the afternoon and a Rolling Wheels World of Outlaws night show on the same day, October 12, 1991. The highlight of the day was watching Sammy win BOTH features and he remains the only driver in W of O history to win 2 on the same day at different tracks, I think, lol. I also saw Sammy win 2 World of Outlaws Features the same day at Bloomington, IN (Steve's home track), that might even be more memorable....

PS Ahh, the meltdown. I threatened to kick a drunks @$$ because he was cheering for the Outlaw wrecks and other dumb stuff like that, I should have just popped him one in hindsight. The imagination grows with time, I should have stayed on Beer Hill, they were more sober and a whole lot more fun than the ignorant drunks I was sitting with that night.....
