The opening night of the inaugural ASCS Western World
Non-Wing Championship attracted an influx of
heavy hitters from throughout the nation to Manzanita Speedway's ½-mile clay
oval on Friday night.
But the end result was much the same as the previous 16 American Sprint Car
Series Canyon Region events contested this season, with Charles Davis, Jr.,
and Jeremy Sherman taking the top two positions in the 30-lap feature.
Davis raced around Sherman with just a handful of laps to go to snare his
fifth series win of the season aboard Jim Massey's No. 50 DRC. Sherman, the
current ASCS Canyon Region points leader, settled for second.
Indiana's Jon Stanbrough, a winner of 30 feature events this year, claimed
the show position, with California hotshoe Cory Kruseman claiming the fourth
and final lock-in position to Saturday night's $5,000-to-win Parker Store ASCS
Western World Non-Wing Championship finale.
Mississippi gunner Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., earned a front row starting
position alongside Sherman for the feature event through heat and qualifying race
action. But when he hot out of shape exiting turn two on the opening circuit,
past Arizona state champs Josh Pelkey and Bob Ream, Jr., were collected in
the melee, with all three done for the night.
Sherman then led much of the way, only to have "Chargin" Charles Davis, Jr.,
deny him a 12th series victory triumph on the season.
Jerry Coons, Jr., rounded out the top five behind Davis, Sherman, Stanbrough
and Kruseman. Indiana's Bill Rose was sixth, with Casey Shuman, Mike
Leslie, Jimmy Crawford and Matt Rossi completing the top ten.
Davis, Crawford, Sherman, Jeff Henry, Bryan Swinehart and Seainn Hendricsen
topped heat race action for the 52-car field, with Robert Ballou, Stenhouse,
Rose, Sherman, Jeremy Reagles and Pelkey winning the qualifying races.
Ballou and R.J. Johnson won the 12-lap "B" Mains.
