Kilcup makes Dirt Cup A-Main again
ALK Promotions, June 22
ALGER, Wash. - Steve Kilcup once again got himself into the Dirt Cup Race of Champions on Saturday, and just like he did the first two nights he had to get in through the B-Main.
Kilcup, the two-time and defending Skagit Speedway champion in 360 sprint cars, ran more laps than most did this weekend. He ran an impressive 170 laps, including four qualifying laps, during three nights of racing. That’s not counting hot laps either.
Though the Sedro-Woolley, Wash. driver’s Dirt Cup came to a bitter end when he was involved in a multi-car accident on the front stretch on lap 26 of the 40-lap event, he impressed everyone with his runs in the M&S Motorsports No. 18 Shark-powered Rocket, sponsored by Burlington Collision, Tri-County Truss, Anderson Power Washington, Art’s Auto Wrecking and Sign-Mart.
Kilcup qualified 24th out of 54 cars on Thursday, putting him in the fourth heat race where he finished fifth. Forced to run his first of three consecutive B-Main appearances, Steve raced his way to a fifth place finish to transfer to the A-Main.
Steve made one of the run’s of the night in the 25-lap Thursday preliminary feature. He started 20th and moved all the way up to finish 10th. Despite the B-Main appearance, Kilcup found himself tenth in points after just one night.
Friday afternoon, Kilcup was feeling good about how his weekend was going. Friday night, however, turned out to be rougher than anyone expected. Steve qualified 22nd and finished fifth again in the second heat race. Running his second B-Main, Kilcup outdueled Toni Lutar for the last transfer position to the A-Main event.
In that A-Main, Kilcup had completed 22 laps when contact was made with former track champion Barry Martinez coming out of turn four, sending Kilcup tumbling hard down the front stretch. Kilcup climbed out of his car dejected, but unharmed. Kilcup dropped eight positions in the Dirt Cup points as a result of his misfortune.
The top 16 cars were locked into Saturday’s A-Main. Being 18th in points, Kilcup would start on the front row of the B-Scramble, which he finished second in to start on the front row of the 20-lap B-Main. While California visitor Kyle Hirst motored away from everyone, Kilcup finished second easily and once again found himself in the A-Main, starting 18th.
In the Dirt Cup Race of Champions, Kilcup was holding his own and slowly moving up before suddenly cars started tangling on the front stretch and Kilcup had nowhere to go. Steve was not among the three sprint cars that went upside down in the melee, but severe front end damage ended his evening.
Kilcup remains sixth in the 410 sprint car division point standings at Skagit Speedway. The 410 sprint cars do not race this coming Saturday but will return to action on July 5 when Skagit has its annual mid-season championships.
