Van Dam, stuck with small motor, still competitive at Dirt Cup   ALK Promotions, June 22   ALGER, Wash. - Henry Van Dam wanted to compete in the 37th Annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway this weekend.   Just one problem. Skagit’s crown jewel event was going to feature a whole bunch of the top 410 sprint cars on the west coast. Van Dam only has a 360ci Shark engine under the hood of the Van Dam Racing No. 33v Rocket.   The 26-year-old out of Enumclaw, Wash. Made an effort to acquire a 410ci motor for the event. Fans everywhere were hoping he would. He’s won twice in 360 sprint cars at Grays Harbor Raceway, where he is leading the season points, and a couple of times he’s made charges from the back of the field to finish in the top-five at both Grays Harbor and Skagit Speedway.   He’s simply an exciting driver and many feel he’d be a top competitor in the Dirt Cup, in only he had the proper sized motor. If he didn’t Henry had said he wouldn’t expect to show up with the 360ci motor. He was unable to get that 410ci motor.   There he was, however, in the pit area unloading his car on Thursday afternoon. He figured, why not? Just as long as he loaded up the car unscathed each night, and that he did.   Van Dam took his car, sponsored by Van Dam Dairy, Shareway Industries, Rich Van Dam Dairy, Corliss Resources and GMS Metalworks, and qualified with a time of 12.615 seconds and was slated to start tenth in the first heat race that night. He finished ninth in that event, sending him to a 15th starting position in the C-Main. Racing with more powerful and faster 410 sprint cars, he finished 11th.   Friday saw Van Dam qualify better and further up the standings despite the horsepower disadvantage, clocking in at 12.306 seconds around the 3/10-mile, high-banked clay oval. In the fourth heat race he started eighth and finished seventh out of ten cars. Van Dam impressed people in the C-Main, where he started eighth. Though he failed make it to the top two to transfer to the B-Main, he still moved up four positions to finish fourth in the 15-lap event.   After points from the two preliminary nights of racing were combined, Van Dam was tied for 36th in points out of the 54 cars that entered the Dirt Cup. Van Dam lost the tie-breaker to Brandon Harkness based on qualifying times from the preliminary nights, which knocked him out of the C-Scramble. The C-Scramble determined the first six starting positions for the C-Main, which could have been helpful to Henry. Van Dam started the C-Main in the seventh position, within striking distance of a top-five finish that would put his 360ci-powered sprint car in the B-Main.   Van Dam raced competitively with the 410’s in the field, as well as the other 360’s were competing for the highest finish by a 360ci motor. Van Dam missed the transfer to the B-Main by only one position, finishing sixth. Despite his night being over, Van Dam still earned the distinction of having the best finish by a 360 sprint car in the 2008 Dirt Cup.   Henry is expecting to race at Elma the next few weeks in weekly 360 sprint car competition. Later in July, Van Dam resumes his chase for the ASCS Northwest Region championship as the tour begins the annual Northwest Speed Week at Southern Oregon Speedway in White City on Monday, July 14. Van Dam is second in points, only four tallies behind Seth Bergman.   - - -   Henry Van Dam’s sponsors   Van Dam Dairy   Shark Racing Engines   Corliss Resources   Shareway Industries   Rich Van Dam Dairy   GMS Metal Works   Speedmart   Jack Dilley Logging   D & L Equipment Repair   Enumclaw Suzuki   Chars Barber Shop   Enumclaw Express Lube   Foothills Auto supply   Stanely Patrick Striping   Pete Voss   Bob & Joann Schumway   Enumclaw Auto rebuild   Fire Down Graphics   - - -   Skagit Speedway - Alger, WA: www.skagitspeedway.com
