Held takes runner-up at Southern Oregon Speedway
ALK Promotions, June 16
WHITE CITY, Ore. - Rob Held’s run of success to start his season continued Saturday night at Southern Oregon Speedway in White City, where he finished in second place in a local 360 sprint car feature.
Held, driving the Held Racing No. 68 J&J sponsored by John Carroll Construction, Double R Powder Coating, Powell Plastering, FK Rod Ends, Ringer Gloves and Bell Helmets, started the 30-lap main event on the outside of the fourth row. Held, despite setting his car up for the later part of the race, quickly moved up to the fourth position in the early laps, which saw the 1/3-mile clay oval in a fast, hooked-up condition.
With 15 laps down, the red flag was displayed and all cars were brought to a stop as officials looked for debris on the track, as several cars were having tires cut down. Fortunately for the Sutherlin, Ore. driver, he was not one of them. During the red, Southern Oregon Speedway officials decided to allow the race teams to refuel their cars since several laps had been run under yellow. Racing resumed following the fuel stop.
As the track dried and slicked off in the latter half of the race, Held moved up two more positions to place himself behind leader Dan Menne. Held challenged Menne a number of times, but some untimely cautions kept a clear track in front of Menne for the most part. One last caution with three laps left resulted with the lapped car of Anthony Nunes being placed between Menne and Held on the restart.
Held would’ve loved to have five more laps. Nunes did his best to move out of Held’s way quickly, but with only a few laps remaining, time ran out. It wasn’t a win, but Held still finished a strong second to back up his pair of top-ten runs the other week at Grays Harbor Raceway in Washington.
Held is also fourth in points with the ASCS Northwest Region, which ran those pair of races at Grays Harbor and then was rained out twice in Oregon two weeks later. Held will look to move up the ladder in that series when it resumes action in July. The first of event Northwest Speed Week will take place on Monday, July 14 at Southern Oregon Speedway. Cottage Grove Speedway, where Held has won before, hosts the tour the next night.
