Olson races at Dirt Cup, first visit to Great Falls next

Mitch Olson had high hopes for the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup this past weekend at Skagit Speedway. While Lady Luck smiled on some people, Mitch wasn’t one of them as bad luck plagued his weekend aboard the No. 98m Shark-powered KPC sponsored by SC Fuels, Olson Bros. Excavating, Pro Vac, PRS Group and PMI Truck Bodies & Powder Coating. Now, Mitch looks forward to this weekend’s big ASCS event at Electric City Speedway in Montana.

Mitch made the Thursday preliminary feature, but a pair of electrical fires aboard his car forced him to stop the car twice, ending his night. Friday had Olson racing in the B-Main event, trying to race his way into that night’s preliminary feature. Mitch actually raced past Brent Kaeding for the last transfer position, but right as that happened his right rear wheel promptly packed itself with wet, heavy clay and caused a serious vibration that required him to pull into the pit area and get a new wheel.

Mitch wasn’t the only heavy hitter in the field that experienced problems in the Dirt Cup, and as a result the B-Main field on Saturday was loaded. Kyle Hirst, Brent Kaeding, Jeff Hodgson, Marc Duperron, Toni Lutar, Barry Martinez, Nick Engberg, Colton Heath, Chadd Noland, up and comers Jared Ridge and Danielle Huson and others were all in there with Mitch, trying to race their way into the 40-lap Dirt Cup championship feature. Unfortunately for Mitch, he missed his place in the Dirt Cup finale by just one spot, this coming a year after he finished sixth in the Dirt Cup main event.

Mitch and the No. 98m team will now put the Dirt Cup behind them as they are scheduled to tow to Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Montana for Friday and Saturday’s quadruple-sanctioned event at a track Mitch has never seen before. The ASCS Northwest Region, ASCS Rocky Mountain Region, CanWest (from Alberta), and Big Sky Sprint Tour will all race together in what is shaping up to be Montana’s biggest sprint car event ever as the Montana state record of 43 sprint cars at a single event is believed to be in jeopardy.

Mitch currently sits fourth in the ASCS Northwest Region point standings, and is only 30 points behind leader Steven Tiner. With dozens of cars and different groups all racing together, the points are likely to be shaken up significantly, and Mitch hopes it’s in his favor.

Over the last few years, Mitch Olson has established himself as one of the top sprint car racers in the Pacific Northwest, having main event victories at Skagit Speedway and Grays Harbor Raceway and several more Top 5 and Top 10 finishes elsewhere on the west coast to his credit.
