Olson 8th at Skagit, the Dirt Cup is next

It’s here, the 38th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Van’s Equipment at Skagit Speedway. This Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Mitch Olson of Tacoma, Washington will be looking to snag the $25,000 first place prize in the Northwest’s biggest sprint car event.

This past Saturday Olson ventured to Skagit Speedway to take part in the annual Dirt Cup tune-up race, driving the Mike Olson No. 98m Shark-powered KPC sponsored by SC Fuels, Olson Bros. Excavating, Pro-Vac, PRS Group and PMI Truck Bodies & Powder Coating. With one of Marc Huson’s potent 410ci Shark engines under the hood, Olson earned an eighth place finish in the main event.

Olson was tenth in qualifying with a lap of 11.578 seconds around the 3/10-mile, high-banked clay oval. He was slated to start on the front row of the evening’s first heat race. He would finish second to secure his spot in the 25-lap main event that night.

Mitch started outside the fourth row and ran around their most of the race as the track was hooked up fast and difficult to race on. Olson was never any further back than ninth place and briefly held the seventh position on lap 16. In fact, after Olson was back in eighth place, the Top 8 running order didn’t change at all during the final eight laps, showing the speed of the track and caliber of the competition.

With the eighth-place finish under his belt, Olson now looks to this weekend’s Dirt Cup. Olson was one of the handful of drivers who made the A-Main all three nights at last year’s Dirt Cup and he even led a few laps of one of the preliminary features. In Saturday’s Dirt Cup Race of Champions a year ago Olson earned a very good sixth place finish, his career best Dirt Cup finish.

Thursday and Friday will be complete programs of qualifying, heat races and main events. Points will be tallied from those two nights to help determine main event line-ups on Saturday. A whopping $150,000 in total prize money is at stake over three nights, including the big $25,000 pay check to win Saturday’s feature. Mitch and No. 98m team look forward to seeing everyone at Skagit Speedway this weekend.

Over the last few years, Mitch Olson has established himself as one of the top sprint car racers in the Pacific Northwest, having main event victories at Skagit Speedway and Grays Harbor Raceway and several more Top 5 and Top 10 finishes elsewhere on the west coast to his credit.
