Hillier scores 10
th at Tulare, season’s end near
ALK Promotions, October 20
Chad Hillier had a disappointing Friday night at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, missing the A-Feature event with a ninth place finish in the B-Main event. The Burlington, Wash. driver, however, bounced back the next night at the popular Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif.
Driving the DIRT Inc. No. 5c Maxim sponsored by Jansma Construction, Wink Dog Motorsports and Fast Wings, Hillier drove his way to a tenth place finish at the big 3/8-mile clay oval in central California. For Hillier, it was his sixth top-ten finish in the sophomore season with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. In his entire rookie season campaign, Hillier only had one top-ten finish all season.
Chad started the evening by qualifying 14
th quickest out of 44 entries with a time of 13.699 seconds around the Thunderbowl. The format placed him near the front of the second heat race. Finishing second to local upstart Kyle Larson and ahead of the likes of Brooke Tatnell, Shane Stewart and Lucas Wolfe, Hillier not only qualified for the A-Feature but he was automatically in the Crane Cams Dash as well. Hillier used that to earn the tenth starting position for the 35-lap A-Feature.
In that A-Feature event, Hillier ran as high as sixth on lap seven but slowly slid back to the 12
th position over the next several laps. From there, no one else got by him for the rest of the race. During that early stretch he raced and swapped positions with Roger Crockett, Tatnell, second place points man Jason Meyers and reigning Golden State Challenge “King of California” Jonathan Allard, among others. In the late laps of the race Hillier jumped back up two spots to finish a respectable tenth place with California standout Tommy Tarlton the first car in front of Hillier.
Hillier continues to maintain his 15
th place standing in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series point standings. His tenth place effort on Saturday was worth $2,000 and pushed his season total past the $55,000-mark. With just a few events left in 2008, Hillier still has an outside shot at moving up one more position in the point standings. Tony Bruce Jr. is currently 110 points ahead of him for 14
th place.
Only a couple of events remain for the World of Outlaws in their 30
th Anniversary Season. This Saturday, the series makes up a rained out event at Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas. The race in Kansas will be on everyone’s way to Concord, North Carolina. There, the sprint cars will be joined by the World of Outlaws Late Model Series for the 2
nd Annual VAULT Outlaw World Finals at the Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway on October 30, October 31 and November 1. The inaugural event last year was reportedly a huge success.
