Olson takes third at Yakima ALK Promotions, September 29
Mitch Olson closed the month of September with his third top ten finish in his last four races, taking third place in Saturday’s ASCS Northwest Region race at Central Washington State Fair Raceway in Yakima. For the Puyallup, Wash. driver, this backs up his second and seventh place finishes in the prior weekend’s Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge at Grays Harbor Raceway.
Driving the Mike Olson No. 98m Shark-powered Rocket, Olson for two nights raced in front of thousands of fairgoers at the Central Washington State Fair, many of them seeing sprint cars for the first time. The yearly sprint car show that helps open the fair has been one of the biggest attractions for the fair since the track itself opened in 2000.
After taking third in his heat race on Friday, things didn’t go as well for Olson the rest of the night as they would the next day. Olson started ninth in Friday’s A-Main, but the support broke beneath his nose wing, affecting the handling of his car on a big 3/8-mile oval that was very fast all weekend. That forced Olson to hug the bottom of the track when he rounded the turns on both ends of the track. Olson ended up hitting one of the half-buried tires just off the inside of the track, damaging his car and ending his night.
With damage to his car, Olson was forced to pull out his backup car for Saturday. Olson finished fourth in his heat race and made the top 16 in heat race points again and earned a starting spot in the A-Main. His passing points in the heats earned him the 11th position for the 30-lap A-Main event.
From there Olson drove a good race, stayed out of trouble, and moved forward. Olson drove his way to a strong third place finish in front of the full house of fairgoers and hopefully made a few new fans out of them.
