Olson scores pair of top 10’s at the Brownfield

Mitch Olson had a very good weekend in the 2nd Annual Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge event at Grays Harbor Raceway, driving to a pair a top 10 finishes in the Mike Olson No. 98m Shark-powered KPC sponsored by SC Fuels, Olson Excavating, Pro-Vac and PRS Group.
Olson finished second Friday night after having led much of the 30-lap ASCS Northwest Region feature. Olson led until being passed by Oklahoma hot shoe Wayne Johnson. Johnson’s car however, had mechanical problems, which gave the lead back to Olson. Olson again lost the lead to another Oklahoman, Shane Stewart, later in the race.
On a late race restart, Olson made a big slide job attempt on Stewart in turns one and two of the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval. Olson was in front of Stewart as they exited turn two and entered the back stretch, but couldn’t quite make the move stick as the defending race champion Stewart drove back by him.
Mitch earlier finished third in his heat race and did well enough to just crack the top eight in the heat race points, making him eligible for the pill draw. When the first seven drivers failed to draw the 1 pill, Mitch ended up on the poll.
Saturday saw Olson finish fourth in his heat race. After points from Saturday’s heats and Friday’s events were combined, Olson was in the 40-lap A-Main event. Olson slipped back to tenth at one point but eventually drove to a solid seventh place finish after battles with the likes of Jay Cole and J.J. Hickle. Olson was also one of only a few drivers to finish in the top ten in both nights of the Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge.
Over the last few years, Mitch Olson has established himself as one of the top sprint car drivers in the Pacific Northwest, with victories at Skagit and Grays Harbor Raceway in 360 sprint cars to his credit, along with numerous top-five efforts at other tracks in Oregon. Olson is looking for experienced people, preferably living in Washington’s Pierce County, who may be interested in joining the No. 98m team.
