Rob Held takes 12th in FK Motorsports car at Brownfield
ALK Promotions, September 22

Last week, it looked like Rob Held might have had to sit out the Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge at Grays Harbor Raceway. Bruce Wolfe, however, stepped in with the FK Motorsports No. 1x Rocket and Friday morning the Sutherlin, Ore. driver was in Elma, Wash. installing his motor and his seat.

Friday night saw Held finish second in the evening’s first heat race and make the top eight in heat race points and be eligible for the pill draw. Held started the main event fifth and was having a good run until Held came to a stop, thinking he had something wrong with his right front wheel as his car was acting up. Pushed to the work area, his crew told him nothing was wrong with the right front and Held went back out. With yellow flag laps not counting, Held was still on the lead lap and after tagging the back of the field he drove his way back to a strong tenth place finish in a car he never saw until that morning.

As it turned out, the reason the car was feeling funny was not the right front wheel or the suspension around it. It was learned after the race that his right rear tire had only three pounds of air in it, making his run back to tenth place that much more impressive.

Saturday saw Held take sixth place in the fourth heat race and when points from those heat races were combined with Friday’s events, Held found himself locked into the 40-lap A-Main event worth $10,092 to win. Out of the the 47 entrants, Held was one of the 20 who got to race in that event. Held ran as high as 11th until he was passed by track champion Jay Cole with two laps left and finished a respectable 12th.

After the weekend, Held moved up a position to seventh place in the ASCS Northwest Region point standings with this weekend’s two-day finale at Central Washington State Fair Raceway remaining. Held is again looking for a ride in this weekend’s event in Yakima, Wash.

Rob Held, 26, is one of the up and coming sprint car racers in the Pacific Northwest. More information on Rob can be found online at
