Bergman, M&S team have good times in Chico ALK Promotions, September 9
Seth Bergman and the Mike & Shaylen Motorsports team probably envisioned themselves having a better night in Saturday’s Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in California. Power steering blew before he could race in the C-Main. Weekend over.
Bergman and team, however, did have a good time in Chico. One of 106 teams on hand for the weekend, the No. 18 Shark-powered Eagle sponsored by SignMart, Anderson Power Washing, Burlington Collision, Tri-County Truss and Heavy D was slated to run Friday’s preliminary program while the other half of the field ran on Thursday. Getting yourself in the A-Main on preliminary night was an accomplishment itself but didn’t necessarily guarantee a starting position in Saturday’s A-Feature event, or even the B-Main for that matter.
In qualifying, Bergman drove around the ¼-mile, high-banked clay oval in 12.066 seconds, 24th quickest and putting him in the fourth heat race. Even though the Gold Cup was an Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event, instead of Outlaws Seth had many of California’s finest in that heat race with him. Seth finished sixth, missing the transfer by one position. The driver who held him off for that last transfer was non other than two-time defending USAC Silver Crown champion Bud Kaeding.
In the 12-lap B-Main event, Seth started sixth and went after the front runners immediately. Running fifth on a restart, Seth made the move of his weekend, diving low into turn one and squeezing between the inside edge of the track and his competitor to the outside. Bergman emerged out of turn two in the fourth and final transfer position and then moved into third, where he would finish to secure his starting spot in the Friday preliminary feature.
In the 30-lap preliminary feature, Seth had moved his way towards the top ten from his 19th starting position when a car flipped upside down in front of him and Seth was unable to avoid, making contact. Unable to get his car repaired on time to rejoin the field, he had to settle for a tough 20th place finish.
Because of the disappointing finish and the split field for the preliminary nights, Bergman ended up back in the C-Main for Saturday’s events. Scheduled to start 11th, Seth’s power steering line then blew prior to the C-Main event, preventing him from starting and ending his weekend.
This weekend, M&S Motorsports will be back home in Washington and racing in Saturday’s season championships at Skagit Speedway in the 360 sprint car division. Seth is again expected to drive the car that night.
