Kilcup makes the big show at Skagit ALK Promotions, September 1When the best in the business come, making the A-Feature is no easy task. Steve Kilcup did just that on Sunday night at Skagit Speedway when he qualified for the A-Feature with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. The Sedro-Woolley, Wash. driver, piloting the Mike & Shaylen Motorsports No. 18 Shark-powered Eagle sponsored by SignMart, Anderson Power Washing, Burlington Collision, Tri-County Truss, Art’s Auto Wrecking and Heavy D, had to put a taped “X” on his car number on the wing as the No. 18 was already taken by Outlaw regular Tony Bruce Jr. Kilcup, however, showed he belonged.Kilcup started the evening by qualifying 24th with a time of 11.757 seconds around the 3/10-mile, high-banked clay oval, slating him to start sixth in the fourth heat race. He finished seventh and was forced to race in the B-Main event, which the Outlaws referred to as the Last Chance Showdown. Kilcup easily transferred, finishing second in the 12-lap event.Kilcup was slated to start 23rd, and on a small track like Skagit with two dozen winged sprint cars on it, it is difficult to move forward. It didn’t take long for the leaders to catch traffic. Kilcup though held his own and rode around to a 22nd place finish. On any regular night, that kind of finish would be a disappointing one. With the World of Outlaws, however, just making the show is an accomplishment. Again, Kilcup achieved that on Sunday night.Skagit Speedway will not be racing sprint cars this weekend in observance of the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif. Kilcup is expected to return to action on Saturday, September 13 when Skagit holds its season championships.Kilcup, the two-time former 360 sprint car champion at Skagit Speedway, is on of the top racers in Washington and pilots one of the top cars in the Pacific Northwest.
