Bergman scores first 410 win on last lap at Skagit
ALK Promotions, August 18
Snohomish, Wash. driver Seth Bergman is probably glad he decided to jump in one of Mike Anderson’s sprint cars this past weekend at Skagit Speedway. He ended up leaving the track with his first career victory in 410 sprint cars.
Driving the M&S Motorsports No. 18 Shark-powered Rocket sponsored by Burlington Collision, Tri-County Truss, Anderson Power Washing, Art’s Auto Wrecking, SignMart USA and Heavy D, Bergman said he never drove a car with that much power before, and he ended up needing it at the very end.
Bergman started the evening by qualifying fifth out of 21 cars with a time of 11.855 seconds around the 3/10-mile, high-banked clay oval, which put him in the second heat race. Finishing fourth, Bergman ended up starting the 25-lap A-Main event in fourth.
Race-long leader Mitch Olson had led the first 24 laps of the A-Main event, working his way through traffic. Bergman, meanwhile, slowly worked his way up second place, which he achieved on lap 11. He stayed in second ahead of Colton Heath, himself already a feature winner at Skagit this year, slowly tracking down Olson in the closing laps.
Bergman had just cleared the last slower car between himself and Olson when he took the white flag. Olson, who himself was looking for his first win in a 410 sprint car, had caught of a pair of slower cars racing in front of him, allowing Bergman to real in on Olson as they rounded the track one more time. As they entered turn three, Olson went high trying to get around those slower cars. Bergman dove low and executed the perfect slide job around turns three and four, just clearing Olson as they entered the front stretch for the checkered flag.
Before his big 410 sprint car victory on Saturday, Bergman previously won three races in 360 sprint cars over the last two years while driving his family’s car. Bergman won his first race, a Northern Sprint Tour event, at Cottage Grove Speedway in Oregon in 2006. In May of this year, Bergman won an ASCS Northwest Region event at Grays Harbor Raceway in Washington and for a time led the tour’s point standings. Later he won at Skagit Speedway in 360 sprint car for the first time.
Though nothing is concrete at the current moment, Bergman has expressed a desire to race again with M&S Motorsports in the near future.
