Van Dam takes fourth at Elma
ALK Promotions, August 18

Henry Van Dam continued his chase for the Grays Harbor Raceway championship with another top-five finish in Saturday’s winged 360 sprint car main event.

The Enumclaw, Wash. driver, piloting the Van Dam Racing No. 33v Shark-powered Maxim sponsored by Van Dam Dairy, Corliss Resources, Shareway Industries, Rich Van Dam Dairy and GMS Metalworks, entered the evening fourth in in the track’s point standings for the division, but was only 18 points out of first place. Van Dam, in his first year back from a devastating neck injury in 2007, is in a tight battle with Shawn Rice and former track champions Jay Cole and Glenn Borden Jr.

Van Dam started the evening by finishing fourth in the first heat race and was later slated to start third in the 30-lap A-Main event. Henry ran in the third spot for the first few laps, and briefly passed Borden, the point leader and defending track champion, for second place before Borden got back by him on lap four. Van Dam continued to run in the third position until Rice got around him on lap nine.

From there, Van Dam held down the fourth position for the rest of the race, staying ahead of Cole, the second place points man. Henry would finish behind race winner J.J. Hickle, Borden and Rice.

The top four in the point standings likely remained unchanged, but as tight as they are with two weekly point races left Van Dam is still very much in the hunt for his first sprint car championship. Van Dam will be back at Grays Harbor Raceway, where he has won twice this season, on Saturday, August 23. Two weeks later, Grays Harbor Raceway will crown its track champions on Saturday, September 6.

Henry Van Dam, 26, is one of the up and coming racers in the Pacific Northwest and one of the most popular. Van Dam has wins at both Skagit Speedway and Grays Harbor Raceway to his credit and also has a victory with the old Northern Sprint Tour in 2006. Henry has run at both Washington dirt sprint car tracks several times and has also run with the ASCS Northwest Region this season.
