More top 15’s for Hillier against Outlaws ALK Promotions, August 18
Chad Hillier is continuing to put up consistent finishes out on the road with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, turning in two more top-15 efforts on Saturday and Sunday nights, while getting rained out in Wyoming on Thursday.
Hillier, driving the DIRT Inc. No. 5c Maxim sponsored by Jansma Construction, Wink Dog Motorsports and Fast Wings, continues to hold down the No. 16 position in the series point standings, still trying to get by Tony Bruce Jr. to crack the top 15 in his second season as part of “The Greatest Show on Dirt.”
Thursday night at Thunder Raceway in Gillette, Wyoming, Hillier and the rest of the best sprint car drivers in the land were about to get their 35-lap A-Feature underway when inclement weather rolled in and washed out the event. Though the rainouts have been few and far between lately, it probably brought back bad memories of earlier in the tour’s 30th Anniversary season when they were getting rained out seemingly every week.
After not getting to race in Wyoming, Hillier and DIRT Inc. team rolled to Mandan, North Dakota for the tour’s first ever event at Dacotah Speedway on Saturday. Chad qualified 15th with a time of 15.233 seconds around the 3/8-mile clay oval. Slated to run the third heat race, Hillier finished fifth to transfer to the A-Feature. In that 35-lap event, Hillier started 15th and finished there to earn another $1,000 toward his season total.
The next day, Sunday, the series returned to Nodak Speedway in Minot, North Dakota, where the Outlaws the last two years have been extremely popular. This time around, Hillier qualified 12th out of 29 cars with a time of 13.900 seconds around the 3/8-mile oval, ending up starting on the pole of the third heat race. Finishing fourth in that, Hillier once again made the A-Feature, this one also 35-laps in length.
Hillier started the A-Feature in the 12th position and beat Jason Sides and Lucas Wolfe to finish tenth. For Hillier, it was his fifth top-ten finish of the season, this after having only one top-ten finish in his entire rookie season campaign in 2007. Hillier picked up another $2,000, and having earned over $37,000 this season he is on pace to pass his 2007 total of over $48,000.
The World of Outlaws continues the Gold Rush Tour on Tuesday night when the series visits Billings Motorsports Park in Montana for the first time since 2005. On Friday and Saturday, Hillier returns to Castrol Raceway, a track in Edmonton, Alberta where Hillier has prior experience at and has seen much more than practically all of the regulars on the World of Outlaws tour. This weekend’s event at the famous Edmonton clay oval is the annual Oil City Cup, named for Edmonton’s big oil industry.
After Edmonton, Hillier will return to his Washington state roots on Labor Day weekend. Friday and Saturday, August 29 and 30 he will race again on Skagit Speedway, where he is the only driver in the track’s history to have a won a track title in each of Skagit’s three sprint car divisions. Hillier will hope his experience at the 3/10-mile, high-banked clay oval will pay off in a couple of weeks. On Monday, September 1, Hillier will return to Grays Harbor Raceway, another track where he has a lot of experience. Hillier’s homecoming will end on Tuesday, September 2, when another track he has seen a lot, Cottage Grove Speedway in Oregon, will host the series.
