Kilcup takes fifth at Skagit 360 Nationals
ALK Promotions, August 4

Steve Kilcup didn’t find himself in victory lane on Saturday night, but again he was one of the better cars, and not to mention a survivor, of the A-Main event of the Bob’s Burgers & Brew Skagit 360 Nationals.

Kilcup, piloting the M&S Motorsports No. 18 Shark-powered Rocket sponsored by Burlington Collision, Tri-County Truss, Anderson Power Washing, Art’s Auto Wrecking, SingMart and Heavy D, was one of only ten starters, out of 22, to finish the 40-lap main event on an unusually rough Skagit Speedway. Kilcup, who hails from Sedro-Woolley, Wash. would end up finishing fifth.

An even 50 cars were in the pit area on Friday night, and Kilcup qualified seventh quickest with a time of 12.328 seconds around the 3/10-mile, high-banked clay oval. He finished third in the evening’s second heat race to transfer to the A-Main. From his tenth starting position, Kilcup rode around to a ninth place finish. With points tallied up, Kilcup earned the eighth starting position in Saturday’s feature.

Kilcup immediately marched forward in the opening laps of the race, moving four positions to the fourth spot by the end of lap five. Seth Bergman flipping upside down on lap seven resulted in Kilcup taking over the third spot.

Kilcup and Mitch Olson, who had started 11th, engaged in a hot battle for the third spot, each swapping passes. Kilcup ended up being in the third position still by the time another red flag was displayed with 12 laps down. On the restart Cory Chamberlain, who was running second in front of Kilcup, bobbled significantly in turn two and Kilcup was caught behind. This allowed Olson sneak on by for the third spot. Colton Heath, who eventually finished second after starting 13th, soon followed Olson and passed Kilcup for fourth.

Chamberlain bobbled again with 17 laps down and Olson, Heath and Kilcup all motored by him. Kilcup maintained the fourth position, and just kept on going while cars continued to fall out of the race because of the rough track. It wasn’t until less than two laps were remaining when California visitor Willie Croft made the pass around Kilcup for fourth.

Finishing fifth, it gave Steve a top-five finish in the Skagit 360 Nationals for the third straight year, this following fourth place efforts in 2006 and 2007. He also finished sixth in the 2005 race. Primarily driving a 410 sprint car this year, this weekend was only Kilcup’s second and third nights in a 360 this season. Kilcup, however, has had plenty of experience driving a 360 sprint car at Skagit Speedway, where he won the track title in 2006 and 2007.

The No. 18 team is scheduled to return to 410 sprint car action this Saturday night at Skagit. Kilcup, however, has been victimized by someone scheduling a wedding on a Saturday night in the middle of summer. Seth Bergman, out of Snohomish, Wash. will pilot the car this weekend.
