Kilcup to take another stab at Skagit 360 Nationals ALK Promotions, July 31
Steve Kilcup has run all season in a 410 sprint car at Skagit Speedway, only once having climbed back into a 360 sprinter. The 410’s won’t be on the track this weekend as 360 sprinters will be showcased, but for Kilcup there is that desire to compete and succeed in him still.
Why wouldn’t he climb back into a 360 tonight for the 19th Annual Bob’s Burgers & Brew Skagit 360 Nationals? Kilcup, driving for Mike Anderson, won the track championship in 360 sprint cars in 2006 and 2007 and won a number of races along the way. They know they can compete in a 360 sprint car.
There’s $10,000 also that will go to the winner of Saturday‘s A-Main. That there is reason enough to get back into that 360 sprinter.
Then look back at last year’s Skagit 360 Nationals, which capped off Northwest Speed Week for the former Northwest Sprint Challenge Series. Even with a whopping 68 cars on hand, Kilcup finished in the top five in the A-Main event both nights. This was with the likes of Brock Lemley, Roger Crockett, Mitch Olson, Seth Bergman, Travis Rutz, Billy Nutter and current World of Outlaws driver Shane Stewart in the field.
The NSCS is no more, replaced by the ASCS Northwest Region, and the Skagit 360 Nationals is not part of Speed Week this year. As a result, the car count won’t come close to last year’s remarkable number and the field won’t be as strong. Even if they all came back, however, Kilcup would still be one of the favorites to win it. He did well enough last year.
Kilcup, who hails from Sedro-Woolley, Wash. will again pilot the M&S Motorsports No. 18 Shark-powered Rocket, sponsored by Burlington Collision, Tri-County Truss, Anderson Power Washing, Art’s Auto Wrecking, Sign-Mart and Heavy D.
Tonight’s preliminary event at Skagit Speedway will consist of qualifying, heat races and main events, with points playing a primary role in determining line-ups for Saturday’s event, which will consist of scrambles and main events only. ALK Promotions is also putting up $100, with extra fan money behind it, for Saturday’s hard charger.
