Kilcup fights off bad nose wing, takes fourth at Skagit
ALK Promotions, July 28

Two weeks ago it was bad breaks. This time around it was problem with the nose wing for Steve Kilcup. The bolts had fallen out and it was vibrating bad, and likely affected the down force on the front of his 410 sprint car. It just happened to occur when he was leading the 25-lap feature at Skagit Speedway.

Kilcup was passed by a hard charging Travis Rutz for the lead, but still held his own well. Though passed by Eric Fisher and former track champion Barry Martinez late in the race, Kilcup still finished a strong fourth in the M&S Motorsports No. 18 Shark-powered Rocket, sponsored by Burlington Collision, Tri-County Truss, Anderson Power Washing, Art’s Auto Wrecking, Sign-Mart and Heavy D.

Earlier in the evening, Kilcup was third quickest in qualifying with a time of 11.809 seconds around the 3/10-mile, high-banked clay oval. He later finished fourth in the first heat race of the evening. Kilcup, who won the 360 sprint car track championship at Skagit Speedway the last two years, has run primarily 410 sprint cars at Skagit this year and was tied for fifth in points entering the weekend. Kilcup, however, was only ten points out of third place.

This Friday and Saturday, Kilcup will jump back into a 360ci powered car for the Bob’s Burgers & Brew Skagit 360 Nationals. In last year’s event, which was sanctioned by the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series, Kilcup was one of the stronger drivers in the field that was a whopping 68 cars strong. His many years of experience racing at Skagit Speedway helped him as he finished in the top five in the A-Main both nights.

Even though he has spent little time in a 360 sprint car this year, Kilcup was very strong at Skagit the past two seasons (his track titles both years proving that) and he again should be a threat to win his first Skagit 360 Nationals crown and the $10,000 payday this weekend.
