Van Dam gets tippy, then takes ninth in Northwest Speed Week opener
ALK Promotions, July 15

WHITE CITY, Ore. - Henry Van Dam solidified his top-five position in the ASCS Northwest Region point standings despite having to do things the hard way in Monday’s opener of Northwest Speed Week with the ASCS Northwest Region.

The Enumclaw, Wash. driver, piloting the Van Dam Racing No. 33v Shark-powered Rocket sponsored Van Dam Dairy, Corliss Resources, Shareway Industries, Rich Van Dam Dairy and GMS Metalworks, twice had problems in the 30-lap A-Main event at Southern Oregon Speedway near Medford but still drove his way to a ninth place finish.

Van Dam, who entered Speed Week second in points, was slated to start the 30-lap A-Main event in the middle of the pack. Van Dam, however, was involved in an accident on the start and tipped his car over on its side. Van Dam was able to continue and restarted 17th. Within seven laps he was up to 13th, only to spin out again on lap eight. Over the last 23 laps of the race, Van Dam raced his way back to the ninth position.

Though Jayme Barnes likely took over the ASCS Northwest Region points lead with his second place finish, Van Dam appears to be in second still as Seth Bergman, who was the points leader going into Speed Week, failed to make the A-Main.

Northwest Speed Week continues tonight at Cottage Grove Speedway. On Wednesday night, Van Dam will race at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore. for the first time since his season-ended neck injury in May of last year. Van Dam and the series makes its first visit to Sunset Speedway Park in Banks, Ore. on Thursday. Northwest Speed Week concludes on Friday and Saturday with the Evergreen State Sprint Challenge at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.
