Olson takes runner-up at Elma mid-seasons

Mitch Olson scored his best finish of the season on Saturday night, finishing runner-up to Jay Cole at the mid-season championship event at Grays Harbor Raceway.
Olson, piloting the Mike Olson No. 98m Shark-powered KPC, sponsored by SC Fuels, Olson Bros. Excavating, Pro-Vac and PRS Group, started the shortened 27-lap 360 sprint car event in the third position and on lap two he passed Cole to move into the third position. Cole passed Olson right back on the next lap and Olson would run third for a short time.
Olson lost the third position to Henry Van Dam and then fell back to fifth when Steve Vague passed him on lap 11. Olson, however, stormed back and in the span of three laps he moved up the standings, passing early leader Shawn Rice for second place on lap 14.
The Puyallup, Wash. driver would run second the rest of the race and finish ahead of Rice, defending track champion Glenn Borden Jr. and former Northern Sprint Tour champion Rick Fauver. After his top ten run at the Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in June, Olson has been at Elma each week since and has finished in the top ten every week, also having finishes of tenth and ninth.
Olson will be back at the wide 3/8-mile, high-banked clay oval this weekend when the ASCS Northwest Region completes Northwest Speed Week on Friday and Saturday with the Evergreen State Sprint Challenge, which will pay $5,000 to win. Last year, Olson won twice with the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series. Olson also won three features at Grays Harbor Raceway in 2006, and could one of the drivers to watch this weekend.
