This weekend in Caney, Kansas at the Caney Speedway, which is located just north of the Oklahoma Kansas border on Highway 75, they are hosting two big nights of Open Wheel racing at the newly re-opened Caney Speedway. This track was built around 1969 and has produced some of the closest and wildest races around.

Four radio stations are involved this weekend playing radio ads inviting race fans from the border towns near the Caney Speedway to come and enjoy a weekend of Open Wheel Racing action.

The semi-banked track was recently re-profiled by one of the best track builders in the country. This quick 1/4 mile was re-shaped, providing level 40 foot wide straight which quickly transition into the 51 foot wide bank turns providing two and sometimes three wide racing in the corners.

Two big advantages to this track is there are no close guardrails on the outside of the turns or back stretch, and some of the more agressive drivers hang their right rear off the edge of the track, passing cars on the outside. It is one of the wildest things I have ever witnessed a dirt track driver do! Advantage two, due to the high elasticity of the dark gumbo clay media, this track provides a tacky super smooth surface.

Two big nights of Open Wheel racing action begin as the first OCRS Sprint cars are pushed off and ready to rumble at 8pm on Saturday night July 21. Then on Sunday evening at 6:30pm the Micro Sprint Cars of the ASCS2 racing series take center stage at the Caney Speedway. Tickets are available the nights of the shows.

Support classes on Saturday for the OCRS Sprints include the full Caney Speedway Saturday card of Pure and Factory Stocks, plus the super quick Modifieds and Micros. Watching Modifieds on this quick tacky 1/4 mile is totally different from watching them at Tulsa Speedway. Left wheel in the air, torqued over coming out of turn four on the front straight, and on the gas. John Potter took the win here during opening rounds defeating the top three finishers Jason Teague, and Colby Artherton.

Full concessions are available from the all-new snack shack, including Ice Cold Fountain Pepsi Products and several brands of Popular Energy Drinks served at freezing temps. The smoked pork sandwich that you "Dial In" to your liking with your proper amount of Bar-B-Q sauce is the track favorite among BBQ sandwich lovers. All other track food favorites are available at the Snack Shack located behind the Main Grandstand.

The Grandstand seating is an extra wide metal bench and not a narrow wood plank. Stands are located up close to the action, so close you may want to bring along an extra pair of earplugs. The Metal seating came from the same manufacture that made the seating for the famous Devils Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. The design allows for extra comfort with extra foot room. As always with stadium seating bring along a blanket, stadium seat or cushion for additional comfort.

Parking is provided for free and is located near the front entrance. I would recommend coming early for best parking spots. Spectators, take the second entrance on the left after you go over the Rail Road Tracks. The first entrance to the track on the left is the Pit Gate entrance. Spectator parking is divided using fence posts to define French drains. This drainage is required due to the fact there is a large open strip mine behind the racetrack in turns one and two that provides the water for the track preparation. Up side is that mine rarely runs dry, downside is with heavy rains the parking area requires the drainage ditches, thus the open trench systems that have been there for years. Just use caution observing those fence posts markers when negotiating the parking areas.

This track has lots of stories that go back in time. It is always fun to visit a nostalgic facility and re-live a piece of racing history. Nothing fancy about this Speedway, just good dirt, great shaped track and some fast competitive passing and crashing action. The present promoter is constantly up-grading this season as time and money allows.

It will be very special to watch the ballet of the high horsepower precision modern machines of today, with highly skilled drivers, negotiating the quick, technical, tacky, fast transition ΒΌ mile Caney Speedway. Make plans now to attend and support the re-birth of Open Wheel racing at the Caney Speedway this weekend.
