LIGHTNING SPRINT CARS BEGIN 2ND HALF OF THE 2011 SEASON SATURDAY AT BAKERSFIELD!
(Placentia, CA, July 20, 2011) The California Lightning Sprint Car Series will begin the second half of the 2011 season this Saturday night, July 23rd, at "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval," the Bakersfield Speedway. Joining the CLS on the night will be the Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and the NMRA 3/4 Midgets.
Wildomar's Tim Brown has been the main topic on the points championship side of the ledger throughout the first half of the campaign. The 51-year-old racer led most of the way through the series first eight races. Heading into the first race of the second half on the Scott Schweitzer promoted track, Brown holds a commanding 107-point lead over veteran Dan Hillberg.
The key to Brown's success thus far in 2011 has been his consistency. Not only has he finished every single main event, but he has only finished out of the top five one time (ninth at Santa Maria on May 14th). At the series last race at Perris Auto Speedway, Brown, who is contesting his fourth year of CLS competition, finished third in the main event behind first time winner Darren Hillberg of Placentia and 17-year-old Kevin Michnowicz of Lomita.
Like Brown being in first place most of the way, Dan Hillberg has occupied the runner-up spot a majority of the time. However, he had better not look behind as 16-year-old Alexander Bissett of Hemet has crept to within 30-points of Hillberg. Fourth spot is 15-year-old Carlsbad racer Jacob Will. Anaheim veteran Dale Gamer rounds out the top five.
The hottest driver in the second quarter of the year was defending series champion Jarrett Kramer of Lakeside. The first four races of the season were a nightmare for the affable 29-year-old. After a fifth in the season opener at Perris, he missed a race, failed a post-race inspection after an apparent win and had a tenth. He began the second-quarter of the year with a second place finish at Santa Maria and backed that up with a win at Perris' Annual Salute to Indy on May 28th. In the last two races at Victorville and Perris, Kramer has a couple of sixth place finishes and is only three-points out of fifth.
When it comes to wins in the first half of the year, the Kevin & Bobby Michnowicz #21K has been the class of the field. It has won five of the first eight main events. Kevin has three of them while father Bobby has two. Dan & Darren Hillberg and Kramer each have one win.
After the first race of the year at Bakersfield was rained out on March 24th, the CLS returned on April 30th and Bobby Michnowicz won the main event. With son Kevin taking this weekend off, Bobby will be trying for two wins in a row at Bakersfield on Saturday.
After this weekend, the CLS returns to its home track, Perris Auto Speedway, on July 30th in a show that will also feature the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars and the Senior Sprints. CLS will make its final appearance of 2011 at Bakersfield on September 24th.
