McGowen Tops NCRA Sport Mod Field in Caney!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Caney, Kansas – June 17, 2011 - Levi McGowen of nearby Chanute brought one home for the home crowd as he took the lead on lap two and withstood several challenges from Robert Elliott throughout the race to win the Bob Howard P.D.C. and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Smiley's Racing Products southern sport modified feature finale Friday night at Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kansas.

Jeremy Chambers and defending series champion Todd Decker of Edmond, Oklahoma were scheduled to start on the front row for the twenty-five lap feature. But before drivers could to racing action turn two became calamity corner as Chambers, Decker, Chad McNamara, Ross McCartney, Devin Gerrior, Landon Maddox and Matt Weintz all got together to bring out the caution and a whole new restart.

After a brief caution on the attempted restart delayed things, racing action got underway with Kinzer Edwards taking the lead. His lead would be short lived, however as McGowen as his Jim Westoff/Muffcreek Farms/L&M Motorsports sponsored #89 sport mod would take the lead down the front stretch to lead lap two.

A couple more cautions slowed the pace the next two laps, including one for Triple B Oil Field Services rookie contender Edwards as he spun in turn two.

When the drivers finally calmed down and racing action finally resumed, a long stretch of green flag racing awaited with McGowen still out front. Robert Elliott of Clinton, Oklahoma was no more than three car lengths behind as the front runners found the top of the cushion on the quarter mile clay oval to their liking.

Near the races midway point, another series rookie contender, J.D. Choate began to close in on Elliott as he had worked his way up into the third position.

At the halfway mark it was McGowen, followed by Elliott, Choate, Jim Pearcy and "B" feature winner Brandon Smith of Amarillo, Texas, who had worked his way up through the field from his fifteenth starting position.

It stayed that way until the races final caution appeared on lap seventeen for debris on the front stretch.

Racing resumed without a hitch on the restart with the front runners setting a fast pace, entering lapped traffic with five laps to go. But that didn't detour McGowen as he worked lapped traffic to his advantage and would hold on to take his first career series feature victory.

"I had thought that the bottom was the place to be," said McGowen. "But Kinzer showed me the top was working so we went up there and it felt real comfortable. I knew the way the track was that it would be hard to get under me so we just kept our line and held on."

Elliott finished second while Choate had his best series finish to date in third. Edwards battled back from restarting at the tail of the field on lap three to finish fourth. Pearcy rounded out the top five.

Edwards, Chambers and Decker took home victories in the three, eight lap heat races while Brandon Smith wired the field in the ten lap "B" feature.

good job David. not to sound like I'm a super expert at it (I've just done it about 2% as many times as you LOL if that! lol) - its definitely worth a collective pat on the back when you completely burn the red eye like that and top it all off with a quality article man. So thanks man - for goin the extra mile and deliverin' the goods.

speakin of the goods - only recognize a few names in that. cool to see those guys really stickin with the tour. I reckognize Elliot, McNamara, Maddox, Decker, Rauschenberg and it's cool to see all these guys really following from Beaver to Amarillo and back to Caney. thats a lotta miles! I'm starting to think Kinzer Edwards is one of my favorite drivers I haven't really met yet. This dude really does race anything, anytime, anywhere. congrats to him on his blast back through the field to 4th. I think this gasser will end up makin a lot of noise on a lot of stages and pretty soon too.

And again, thanks for burning red eye gettin the article up man. Even though under an ambien haze I won't remember them in the morning - I enjoyed readin' the write up and results. I'll enjoy readin it for a first time again tomorrow too ;) hahaha.

lol I kid - obviously I'm not THAT tired yet lol.
