Persistent Smith Takes Lawton Feature

By: John Lemon

Lawton, Oklahoma (August 14, 2010) – Persistence played a key role for Danny Smith tonight. To begin with, Smith’s racecar hauler blew a tire enroot to Lawton Speedway for another stop on the 2010 Oil Capital Racing Series sprint car tour. Having over come that hurdle and arriving at the track just in time for he and teammate Kyle Clark to get their hot lap sessions in, Smith continued to put pressure on race leader Lee Jennings in the ‘A’ Feature event while chasing Jennings for several laps and made the winning pass with two laps left to go.

The feature started with Jennings and Kyle Cobb leading the field to green. The two were dead even at the completion of lap one then Cobb took the position on the second go around with Smith settling down into the third spot. Travis ‘Hollywood’ Jenkins would cross the line in fourth and OCRS points leader Jamie Passmore would follow Jenkins and in doing so, he would hit the outside retaining wall at the start/finish line, but he would continue onward. Joe Wood Jr. would take Passmore’s spot away from him the next trip around Lawton’s red clay oval. A spin by Fred Mattox in turns one/two would bring out the first caution of the race.

Cobb would keep control of the lead on the restart while Smith would keep an eye on Jennings. On the seventh lap, Jennings would take the lead away from Cobb. Two laps later, Whit Gastineau, who had been moving slowly forward, worked his way around Jenkins for fifth with Sean McClelland charging as well. Wood suffered misfortune when the “HogWagon” would spin to a stop in turn four on lap seventeen of the 25 lap affair. On lap 21, Mattox would come to a second stop thus bunching the field up for a short dash to the finish. While under yellow, Tim Kent had worked his way into the top ten but suffered a flat right rear tire and retired prior to the track going back to going back to green.

Once underway, Smith immediately began to put pressure on Jennings for the top spot, Jennings ran a smooth and calculated race but on lap 23, Jennings made a mistake and lost momentum and that allowed the persistent Smith to overtake him for the lead. McClelland and Cobb would also work past Jennings to improve their positions. Smith took the checkers for his second win of the season (two of the last three OCRS events) in his “Same Day Auto Repair” number 5$ mount. “I just bided my time at the start then towards the end I knew I had to get moving” said the elated winner. “After the problems we had just to get here, this is a good way to end the night,” said Smith. Jennings took the results all in stride. “I knew how to run good laps. I just messed up one time and it cost me” said the pilot of the Jennings Garage / Quality Tow sponsored car. “Sometimes your on the good end and sometimes your not. We ran well and although we wanted it (the win), we know we did run well.” McClelland took the runner up spot with Cobb, Jennings and Gastineau taking the top five spots. Completing the top ten were: Passmore, Andy Shouse, Jenkins, T.J. Herrell and Gary Owens.

Heat races were won by Passmore, Smith, Cobb and Jenkins. Herrell took the ‘B’ Feature win with Kyle Ezell, Terry Easum and Beau Gastineau earning transfer tokens to the ‘A’ Feature. The next stop for the OCRS warriors will be next Saturday night at the famed Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee Oklahoma, It will mark the first time in several years that an open wheel event has graced the large half-mile speedway.
