Smith Ends Drought With Humboldt Win

By John Rittenoure

HUMBOLDT, Kansas (July 30, 2010) - Danny Smith visited the winners circle for the first time in almost a year with his victory in the OCRS main event Friday at the Humboldt Speedway. Smith drove off the pole and led all 25 laps to become the sixth different winner in 13 events held so far this season.

"That is easy for an old man," smiled Smith. "We had some really tough competition tonight, but Bill and Skip dialed the car in and it was good to go tonight."

It may have been a start-to-finish run but it was far from easy. Smith had series points leader Jamie Passmore close behind in second and had to turn back a final turn challenge from Passmore for the win.

"We had a flat tire on the right rear going down," Smith said. "It only had about four pounds of air in it. We were lucky there at the end. I could hear him (Passmore) coming and I could tell the tire was flat. I was just wondering how may laps we had to go."

With Smith's right rear losing air Passmore did close up behind Smith in the final laps and tried to make a run from the high side in turn four on the final lap. But Smith held on for the win and what may have be the most fun he has had all year.

"This is one of the most fun tracks we have been too," said Smith of the D-shaped 3/8's mile oval. "This is the second time we have been here and it is a great facility. Everyone should come here and look at how they do it.
"Here we are in the dead of summer and the track preparation was so good the track still had moisture in it."

In the opening laps Passmore had to battle with Kyle Clark for the runner-up position before finally winning the fight on lap three. Two laps later Mike Goodman passed Clark for third. Lapped traffic came into play on lap 14 but neither Passmore of Goodman could take advantage. Clark finished fourth and Tim Kent was fifth.
