OCRS / MAS PRESENTS SPRINT CARS N’ FIREWORKS
By: John Lemon
Tulsa, Oklahoma (June 29, 2010) It’s the Fourth of July weekend and it’s time for the
annual celebration of the birth of our country. In standing with our long love
affair of annual July 4th celebrations, the motorsports world of all
varieties will once again hold racing action throughout this special holiday
weekend. This Saturday night, the Oil
Capital Racing Series sprint cars will visit the dirt track mega speed
plant of Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville Oklahoma
for a night of high speed wheel to wheel racing action and a fireworks
extravaganza by Big Boyz Fireworks.
OCRS comes into MAS this Saturday night having just
completed a doubleheader weekend that saw two time defending champion Jamie Passmore of Rose Oklahoma and young
gun Whit Gastineau of Oklahoma City
pick up victory hardware. For both racers, it was their second wins of the 2010
OCRS sprint car tour that takes the series to a dozen different racetracks this
season. With nine events into the books thus far, the battle for the 2010 OCRS
crown is as hot as it is during the sweltering summer days.
Stillwell’s Rafe
Essary leads Passmore by a scant single point for the right to sit atop the
point charts with a 754-753 advantage. Essary is also a two time OCRS winner
this season and was all but two laps shy form bagging his third of the year
last Saturday night at the Lawton
Speedway if not for the late race heroics of Gastineau. Passmore, who is
trying to three-peat OCRS crowns, won convincingly at Outlaw Motor Speedway in Oktaha last Friday and is counting points
as a child would count pennies from a broken piggy bank. Going into OMS action,
Passmore led Essary by 12 points. After his victory and Essary’s fourth place
showing, that lead became 21 points. With Essary’s runner-up finish last
Saturday coupled with Passmore’s eighth place finish, Essary took over the top
spot by the single digit marker. Mike
Goodman, Tim Kent and Fred Mattox who
are third through fifth respectively, are all within 62 points of one another
for the third spot on the charts. Owasso’s Matt
Sherrell is the defending champion of this event having scored the win on
July 4th of last year in Don
and Pat Carnes #35 Sherrell Paint
& Body sprinter.
With milder than normal temperatures forecasted for
the holiday weekend, it is a perfect set up for a comfortable evening of racing
entertainment and of course, the fireworks show. MAS and OCRS invite you to
join us as we celebrate our country together. Gates will open at 5pm with
racing set to get underway at 8pm. OCRS drivers meeting is scheduled to begin
at 7pm.
Mid
America Speedway is a 3/10 mile / medium banked clay oval promoted by Kenny
Garris. Track location is: 2 miles south of the Oklahoma / Kansas state line
just off HWY 169. Take HWY 169 to road EW-02 then go
west 1/2 mile to racetrack.
