Goodman Victorious In Leep Jr Memorial Run

By: John Lemon

Tulsa, Oklahoma (June 13, 2010)

After missing the last Oil Capital Racing Series sprint car event due to a family outing, Tulsa’s Mike Goodman returned to action in the second annual running of the “Harold Leep Jr Memorial” at the Oklahoma Sports Park in Ada Oklahoma. His peers however, wished he had more vacation time to use as Goodman overwhelmed the field to capture his second win of the season in the 25 lap featured event. In doing so, Goodman became the first repeat winner in OCRS competition in 2010.

At the outset, Norman’s Danny Jennings shot out into the lead in his Goodyear sponsored mount over Stillwell’s pole sitter, Rafe Essary. The yellow would come out as fast as the green would drop as Jamie Passmore and Johnny “Hot Rod” Kent would both be victimized by flat tires in turn number one. Both would rejoin the field for the restart. Jennings would once again out drag Essary into the first turn with 17-year-old lady sensation, Shayla Waddell, tucking in behind the front-runners in the show position. Goodman, driving his number 4am Premier Homes / Mid America Speedway sponsored F5 Twister chassis, passed Andy Shouse in turns one and two for fourth before the group set sights for the backstretch. Kyle Cobb, Lee Jennings and Frank Dittman would follow.

Dittman would get by Lee Jennings a lap later while Danny Jennings would slowly place some distance between himself and Essary. The lead would grow to 10 car lengths by lap six. Waddell was keeping Essary in sights until lap eight when she spun to a stop in turn three. The restart order would have D. Jennings at the point followed by Essary, Goodman, Shouse, Dittman, Cobb, L. Jennings, Jeremy Allen, Travis Jenkins and Fred Mattox. The restart was extremely brief, as Jenkins would stop with a flat in turn two. On the next attempt to restart the feature, Dittman, who was 3 for 6 in OCRS feature wins in 2009, spun his machine in turn two. In doing so, Mattox had nowhere to go and collected Dittman sending both to their trailers for the remainder of the race.

The new restart had Goodman passing Essary with a slide-job going into turn one only to have the “Flying Farmer” take the spot back in turn three. The two warriors would then pass one another a couple of more times then disaster struck for the leader. D. Jennings got up and over the turn three / four ridge of the semi banked tracked and stopped in a tree line area. For safety reasons, the red was displayed so safety crews could check on him. Jennings was OK and another restart would ensue. Essary would lead the field to the starting cone and Goodman was ready to pounce. He executed another full blown slide-job into turn one and this time, the move would stick. Going down the rubber laden backstretch, Shouse, who was driving the Butch Roberts #36 XXX sprinter, would overtake Essary and set his goal on Goodman. As the next couple of laps ensued, Goodman and Shouse would have the packed house enthralled as they waged a torrid battle for the top spot.

The red flag would fly again on lap 14 when Allen would spin into the tree lined Bermuda Triangle area of turns three and four. The restart order would now be Goodman, Shouse, Essary, Cobb, L. Jennings, Gary Owens, Matt Sherrell and Jamie Passmore, Jeff Leep and Tim Kent. Sherrell would get by Owens on the restart in turn one and Dean Drake would maneuver by T. Kent and Owens thereafter. Goodman would begin to stretch his lead over a determined Shouse. Essary would bring out the yellow on lap 20 when his right rear tire gave way. He would not restart. L. Jennings would work his way past Cobb on lap 21, as would Owens over Sherrell.

At the finish, it was Goodman taking the win over, Shouse, L. Jennings, Cobb and Owens, Sherrell, Passmore, Drake, T. Kent and Waddell would round out the top ten. When Goodman brought his car to the tech area, the engine was running very hot as steam flowed and the sound of pressure vapors rang aloud. When asked how hot it actually was, Goodman replied: “Too dang hot. That’s how hot it is. I don’t think it can get any hotter than it is now but here we are!” (In the winners circle) “I knew they were coming after me but I wasn’t going to stop unless It (motor) stopped first.” Shouse felt he could have won the race if not for the race stoppages. “It took me three to four laps to really get going” expressed Shouse. “With the long green flag runs, I felt I was OK (to try for the win). He (Goodman) then knew were my line was (preferred line) and he kept me from getting to it.”

In post race inspection, Lee Jennings was disqualified by the OCRS tech inspectors for a mechanical infraction and the order from third back were all moved up a position. The next event for the OCRS warriors is Saturday, June 19th at Mid-America Speedway.

Great racing Saturday Night. Thanks to everyone that showed up. It was great seeing some of the old timers there. The BBQ was provided by Charles Holley, Holley's BBQ-OKC, yes it was great BBQ, please go by and support a fellow racers restaurant. NW 39 & N. Portland, OKC. The pies were provided by Glen Owens, Pauls Valley from Fields Pie Company, they were great also. Alice provided everything else as always.
