Beason Breezes at West Siloam
West Siloam Springs, Oklahoma (August 29, 2009)
Broken Arrow Oklahoma's Jonathan Beason conquered the field at West Siloam Speedway Saturday night and won the Oil Capitol Racing Series top prize for the second time this season on an unseasonably cool August night.
At the drop of the green flag for the 25 lap main event and driving the Broken Arrow Lawn and Garden special, Beason entered turn one in second position from his outside front row starting position chasing Travis Jenkins in the Mid America Speedway sponsored mount. The race was quickly brought to a halt with a yellow flag as Fred Mattox, Travis Ashwood and Jason Adams all got together and stopped in turn one. Maddox was done for the night with front end damage while Ashwood and Adams restarted at the tail of the field.
The ensuing restart saw Jenkins take to the point from the pole position he earned by winning the Same Day Auto Repair "Dash for Cash" race contested earlier in the program. Beason was second into the first turn with defending champion and current OCRS point leader Jamie Passmore of Rose, Oklahoma tucked in behind Beason for third. Andrew Deal was fourth in the Burke Oil machine with Matt Sherrell trailing in fifth in the Sherrell Paint and Body sponsored car.
On the sixth lap, another yellow was displayed for two cars stopped dead on the track. Waylon Weaver and David Stephenson had gotten together on the track with Weaver stopping in turn two and Stephenson in turn three. Stephenson was towed to the pits the rear end woes while Weaver restarted at tail end with a broken front nose wing. The restart line up was Jenkins still at the point followed by Beason, Passmore, Deal, Sherrell, Danny Smith, Dean Drake Jr, Mike Goodman, Johnny Kent and Even Sewell rounding out the top ten.
On the 8th lap, Beason took the top point away from Jenkins and immediately began to put some distance between the two on a track that tested the skills of the drivers as each end of the racing surface had areas that made it a challenge to maneuver their cars around the turns. Beason, in his rookie season, seemed to be the first driver to figure out the tricky turns and enjoyed a comfortable lead at times. Deal slipped back a couple of spots a lap later allowing Sherrell and Smith to race past.
Passmore had been working hard to find an avenue around Jenkins for several laps and he finally accomplished the feat with a pass in turn one of lap 18. Beason was working with almost a half lap lead when the nights final yellow flag was displayed on lap 22 for a spin by Terry Easum in turn four. This set up a four lap dash to the checkers. On the restart for the races climax, Smith slipped by Sherrell for fourth in turn one and Beason, who wasn't going to be a part of any battles for his position, proceeded to checkout on the field with a sizeable lead.
Beason took the checkers from flagman J.D. Etter with a seven car length margin with Passmore, Jenkins, Smith and Sherrell rounding out the top five. Goodman brought it home sixth with Deal, Drake Jr, Sewell and Kent completing the top ten. For Beason, the victory was his second on the 2009 OCRS season having also taken the prize at the Caney Valley Speedway in Kansas back in June. He also leads the OCRS rookie of the year chase as he has had top five finishes in 7 of 8 events he has contested.
The next event for the Oil Capitol Racing Series sprint cars will be Labor Day weekend on Friday September 4th at Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma where Evan Sewell opened the 2009 OCRS season with a win on May 9th and Matt Sherrell took the 4th of July Fireworks special program on 7/4.
