Krukenberg gets hooked on racing
By Cheryl Licklider, Commentary
Wesley Krukenberg became smitten with the sport of stock car racing during a family outing to the Garfield County Fairgrounds track.
“We lived in Waynoka and started coming over to watch the races,” said Krukenberg. “I had always wanted to race and in the middle of 2002 James Longpine gave me an opportunity to drive one of his cars and I loved it.”
According to this dedicated competitor, driving Longpine’s car gave him the chance to experiment and he ended up hooked on the sport. The next season Krukenberg returned to the oval with a street stock of his own and continued pursuit of the checkered flag.
“I’ve really been enjoying racing,” said Krukenberg. “I want to thank God for all the blessings he has given me. God comes first and foremost in my life. I have a great time out here. I love the speed, fellowship and sportsmanship.”
Krukenberg said he enjoys the camaraderie of the sport and appreciates the help the other drivers have given him.
“A lot of guys have helped me out,” said Krukenberg. “Jon Herring Sr. has helped me with the set-up on the car and made it a lot faster. Jon Herring Jr. built the body for my car. In the past Bud Longpine, Jerry Derr and Gary Clift all pitched in to help me.”
This daring driver pilots the quick No. 94 street stock that was built by Clift. Jon Herring Jr. fabricated the body and Norman Cain built the 355 Chevy motor.
Shores Oilfield Equipment, Permium Well Service, Northwest Sales and Rental, R and R Oilfield Rental Service and Herring Fabrication serve as team sponsors. Crew members include Jesse Canaan, Bryndal and Brandon Ballard (daughter and son-in-law) and Krukenberg’s wife, Kama.
“Racing is a family affair for us,” said Krukenberg. “While I enjoy the competition we only come out when the family can come. It is getting harder now I have a grandchild and another one on the way.”
The highlight of this contender’s racing career is finishing ninth in the 2008 $10,000 to win Street Stock Nationals.
“We had to work our way through the C and B features to make the A last year,” said Krukenger. “It was tough racing this little 355 against their big stroker motors but we did it. I had a blast.”
Krukenberg plans to continue his quest for the checkered flag. His goal is to post an “A” feature win this season.
