Tuesdays with TMAC – Road Warrior!

(Bill W) July 8, 2008 – Life on the road can get tough this time of year. Sleep is at a premium when you're running four nights in a row in four states, as was the case for Terry McCarl last weekend. The Altoona, Iowa sprint car driver has another four races on his plate starting tonight and ending Saturday, so there's no rest for the weary. The aim is to be on top of the throne at Eldora Speedway in Ohio this Saturday night, having been crowned the winner of the prestigious King's Royal!

Last week's four-race run began Thursday night at the Huset's Speedway in Brandon, South Dakota with the World of Outlaws. TMAC is a six-time track champion at the facility and timed in fourth quick. He drove from 10th to 7th in the feature. "We seem to be qualifying in no man's land," he relates. "We need to be a little better or a little worse. We started tenth at Huset's and got up to sixth. We seemed to be faster than (Jac) Haudenschild who was in front of us and it started laying rubber in three and four. We had a good run at him coming off of turn two, and we didn't get the pass made and got up out of the rubber, letting someone get by. We definitely had a top five car, and the late yellow didn't help us, but we'll take it."

It was on to Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas on Friday night for some American Sprint Cars on Tour 360 action. After charging up through the field in the main event in Mark Burch's #1m, misfortune set in resulting in a DNF. "We never draw well with Mark and we were off in the heat race," says TMAC. "We went from sixth to third in the B, starting us 21st in the A. We were into the top ten fairly quickly (9 laps). A guy wrecked in front of us there (Jonathan Cornell), and pieces of the rear-end caught me pretty good. Something in the steering broke and I'm glad we didn't crash out before we got pulled off of there. It was better to do it there than at Eldora tonight!"

The WoO was back at it on Saturday night at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas. Terry would start where he finished (eighth). "I like going down there," says TMAC of the small bullring. "It's a great area with some passionate sprint car fans. It's a small track for us, but it ended up being a good racetrack with a bit of a top and bottom. We kind of held our own there in eighth. The last month or so, we've been tight in the feature, so we were probably a bit loose. To go to the 'Ditch' and not tear stuff up, you've got to be happy!"

The weekend terminated at the Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, Indiana on Sunday. After being fast in qualifying (2nd), TMAC started ninth and battled in the top ten before getting upside down on lap 18. "I was a little loose at Haubstadt again," he says. "We got the wing all the way back and got going and looked like we might have a decent top ten finish. I just honked it in there too hard, and got over the cushion where it was deep. The second I got over it, I knew I wasn't coming out with the same wing I started with on top of the car. It wasn't too bad until the last time over, and it came down on the rear of the car hard. That one hurt. It bent the whole rear of the car to the right…that takes a heck of a hit. We had our oldest wing on, so that part of it wasn't too bad."

TMAC will team with Mark Burch again tonight for the Ollie's 360 NASCAR Challenge at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio. Then the WoO will be back in action for the Brad Doty Classic in Lima, Ohio on Wednesday and the Knight Before the King's Royal and the King's Royal at Eldora on Friday and Saturday. "I like Eldora and the Brad Doty," says TMAC. "I think two years ago, we ran third at Lima, and last year we were running well until getting into lapped traffic. We did well during the King's Royal weekend last year too, so I'm really looking forward to this week. These are famous races that everyone wants to win."

Marty from Oskaloosa, IA asks: Who are some of the best drivers that you've seen in action at Knoxville over the years?

TMAC Answers: I've seen a lot of good ones, because I've been going there since I was a little boy. Roger Rager was one of the best. He was pretty bad-ass in the day. Joe Saldana was one of my favorites too. I remember Saldana and Jerry Blundy battling it out. I think you'd have to consider Danny Lasoski one of the best ever there, because he's won more than anyone else and has won the Nationals too. He has a way of getting around that track pretty well. I remember when Doug Wolfgang won ten in a row (1977). People were packing the stands to see if someone could beat him, and when Lloyd Beckman did, that was a huge deal. Doug only raced for two or three years on a regular basis, so if he stuck around, who knows how many he could have won?

Today in TMAC History!

TMAC has three wins on this day in history, two at Knoxville Raceway and one at the Huset's Speedway! The Knoxville wins were both on the front end of Twin Features night. In 1995, he beat Craig Dollansky, Johnny Herrera, Danny Young and Leonard Lee to line. In 2000, he drove the Serace #55 to a win ahead of Jeff Mitrisin, Chris Walraven, Matt Moro and Randy Anderson. In 2001, at Huset's he bested Gregg Bakker, Gary DeWall, Chad Radel and Justin Henderson.
