Brian Brown – Crazy Eights!

(Bill W) March 26, 2008 – Sprint car driver Brian Brown may not feel like writing home about a pair of eighth place finishes, but when 50+ of the best in the business are gathered, it's not bad! Such was the case last Friday and Saturday night at the American Sprint Cars on Tour Spring Nationals at the State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver's finishes were identical, but the two nights were vastly different for the driver of the Doogs family SuperClean #21. Mixing a good draw with a bad one on different tracks got the same results!

The weekend started well with the draw. "We drew a real good number and that was the key on Friday," says Brian. "We were able to win the heat and get into the top eight for the redraw. We were the seventh car to draw and there was a two and a six left in there. We would have loved to draw that two, but we got the six. It was really tough to pass, unless your name was Jason Johnson."

The conditions on Friday were heavy, and it was tough to get by anyone up front, especially with the talent assembled. "We weren't bad, we were rolling around there pretty good," says the 2007 Knoxville Raceway track champion. "With about ten to go, I ran out of tear-offs and our right rear tire started to go down, so our finish (eighth) wasn't bad compared to a lot of other guys who got stuff tore up or didn't make the show."

If Friday's draw was a good one, Saturday's couldn't have been worse. In addition, chilly weather and a much drier track awaited. "We drew 72 out of 72," says Brian. "The dry track fits my driving style a little better. I feel the most confidence when there's room to operate, and the car is dialed in!"

Starting eighth in a heat race that included such drivers as Aaron Berryhill, Terry McCarl, Billy Alley, Natalie Sather and others, Brian was able to surge from eighth to fourth. The performance was still not enough to earn a transfer to Saturday's finale, so Brian had to run the B, which he won ahead of Wayne Johnson and Josh Fisher.

The track slicked to a curb high on the banked 3/8 mile. The slick conditions suited Brown well, and he made some hay early on from his row nine starting spot. "There wasn't a whole lot of passing going on out there, especially after lap fifteen on," he says. "On lap twelve, we were only running twelfth, so we were good to get up to where we did by the end."

The pair of eighth place finishes bode well for the team as they get closer to the meat of their season. It was an improvement over the previous week's efforts at Devil's Bowl and they will look to go several spots higher starting this weekend. The weekend in Oklahoma City was an opportunity for some SuperClean representatives to see the team in action as well. "It was great having them here," says Brian. "We would have liked to have had them in victory lane with us for sure, but I think they had a good time!"

As he steadies his focus on another Knoxville track championship, Brian is also realistic about the team's first two outings. "We're probably still not where we should be, but looking at the quality of the cars we've seen the first couple of weeks, it's like a 'Who's Who?' of sprint car racing. We'll be ready to go and use the next couple weeks to get there."

Brian's Q&A

Richard in Rock Port, MO asks: What are your thoughts about NASCAR? Do you watch it much? Is there anyone you follow?

Brian answers: I really enjoy it. I enjoy watching it, and I think it's really good racing, probably the best in the world as far as side-by-side racing. I follow Tony (Stewart), Kasey (Kahne) and Clint Bowyer the most. I talk to Clint once every couple of weeks, so we keep in touch with how we are both doing. It's fun to turn it on and watch people you know and are able to cheer for. I'm still a Tony Stewart fan, first and foremost!
