We've already got the USMTS Featherlite Fall Jamboree, right? The big Modified show held every year at the Deer Creek Speedway in Minnesota. This past year, Thursday paid $2000, Friday $4000 to win, Saturday $6000 to win and they had a $2000 to win non-qualifier feature too.
Well, how does a Southern Jamboree sound to you? The Houston Raceway Park facility with USMTS running it is the way to make it happen IMO. This year's USMTS Southern Series finale on November 29th, 30th and December 1st is the same dates as the old McAllen Modified Nationals. At one time, that was the place to be for the last race of the year. (It involved a lot of border crossings! )
That's no longer the case. With today's fuel prices and Houston being a lot closer for many modifieds including the ones in the Modified-rich areas of Dallas-Fort Worth, northeast Oklahoma, the Ozarks and the Ark-La-Tex, this can now be the place to end the season every year for Modifieds across the country. The facility is second to none and the hotels are plentiful. Houston is an awesome city too with a lot happening and a great place for racer's families to get some shopping done while the boys work on the cars.
But it needs some national attention too. What we need is for "the players" in this Modified game to step up for this year's show. I know the weather is always a crap shoot this time of year but Houston is really no worse than McAllen weather-wise on that weekend except being about ten degrees cooler which is about 40 degrees warmer than Michigan or Minnesota is this time of year.
So if there's anyway possible you can make it, get to Houston on November 29th or one of the other two dates this year! Yes, it's only a possible $6000 to win this time but we may not be that far from a possible $12,000 to win in 2008 as it may seem. Let's show Houston Raceway Park Speedway manager Larry Rollo, General Manager Seth Angel and USMTS promoter Todd Staley what the potential is for this class at HRP.
Please, let's not start complaining about rules, tires, about being outspent, yada, yada, yada. These are fast Modifieds -- good ones -- and they put on a great show and many of you out there can contribute to that great show. Their drivers put their pants on one leg at a time just like you do. Ask David Horner, Chris Brown and Steve Miller if you don't believe me OR ask Dean Mahlstead who won the $6000 in Minnesota this year.
No, we're NOT Late Models and we're not Sprint Cars but come on out and be part of a great MODIFIED event and let's show folks around the midsouth and across the country that the class with more cars than anybody has a place in dirt track motorsports too. Win, loose or draw, DNQ or DNF, or from the grandstands, I promise you, you will enjoy this show at Houston Raceway Park!
Consider it a great investment for the future of Dirt Track Modifieds in this part of the country!
