Well, I guess it's true what they say, you can't please everyone.  Have what most sprint car fans call the greatest 4 days of sprint car racing and a few clowns on the internet will say "Oh it's not fair, it's too hard of a format for the professionals".  I don't understand what the "problem" is and what there is to "solve"?  You think moving guys with the faster time closer to the front is going to make more passing?  It's a format on a preliminary night, if you don't make it there you can race your way in Friday.  I'll ask you again, who missed the A main on Saturday due to the format on Wednesday or Thursday that would've been a factor?  It's obvious you don't like the nationals since you're on every other post ragging on the nationals.  Maybe next year you should just skip it.  But everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter how dumb it is.

Exactly!   If they did change the format for next year there would still be someone one here after the 2023 Nationals whining about the format.

The format is about earning points for getting you into the A-Main on Saturday or front of B-Main on Saturday.

If you qualified fifth, you earn 192 points. If you qualified 40th, you earn 122 points. You are already 70 points behind if you qualify 40th. So yes, you get to start on the pole of a heat race and you might win the heat race, earning 100 points. However, the fifth qualifier staying in 8th place earns 79 points. So after the heat, the fifth qualifier has 271 points and is in the front row of the B-Main, the heat winner has 222 points and is in the 10th row of the A-Main. Fifth qualifier likely moves into the A-Main from the B-Main, and is lined up in the A-Main one row behind the heat race winner with a 49 point advantage.

The advantage for qualifying well is simply overwhelming, even if not rewarded with heat/A-Main advantages.

If you qualify at the end of the session and the track is garbage, you are at a disadvantage ... you might qualify 15th quick, earning you 172 points. You are 20 points behind the car qualifying 5th quick, so you get to start a row ahead of the 5th quick car in the heat and are essentially given a 6 point handicap and a better chance of making the A on Wed/Thr to compensate for qualifying late.

The current format is probably a bit unfair for Wed/Thr heats and A-Main, but seems fair for the objective of identifying the best 26 cars for Saturday (16 A-Main Lock-Ins and 10 B-Main Lock-Ins) ... and that is the point of the process, correct? Sure, a better format could be created that makes the Wed/Thr A-Main lineups more fair. That doesn't seem to be the objective of the process, however. The objective of the process seems to get 26 great cars locked-into good spots on Saturday.

Not sure why the format is catching any flack.  The cream rose to the top.  5 of top 6 in WoO points got top 10 and the Macedo was top 5 until flat tire.  Top All Star, top 5, 2nd in All Stars 12th.  Best Posse, top 10.  Best California locked in on prelim night and mechanical failure ended his night. Former WoO champ Pittman (hasn't forgot how to drive) top 10.  Kofoid winning in multiple disciplines, top Rookie 11th.  Larson overcame tire issue, top 10.  Other top true outlaws, Rico, Reutzel, K.Madsen 13-15.  4 Knoxville locals in the A. Both Prelim winners got top 5.  What am I missing where anyone "deserving" got screwed?????

Highest WoO not in A = Zearfoss

Highest All Star not in A = Wise

Highest Posse not in A = Macri

Highest California not in A = Golobic/Day

Highest Knoxville Regular not in A = Justin Henderson

None of those missing the A is even a tiny bit of a shock.

**Perspective**  Knoxville Nationals Rock!!!!

Every year people wish the season away because they can't wait for Knoxville then they complain about it for two or three weeks then the season is over out there.
