Dubby & Van May By The Way What Ever Happened To Them

Van can be found roaming the pits or stands at any one of the Pa's Tracks during the weekends in the Summer. He posts On The W.G.M.B. from time to time in the Racing in the Past section. Dub not sure on.

Why did I say the Weld Family....Well, they have all passed away now. The great stories from all the drivers who drove for Papa Weld. Greg Weld a great sprint car drive who made it to Indy, Jerry (Butch) Weld could have been the best driver of the bunch, only to die after getting hit by a car crossing the street. Kenny Weld one of the all time great Sprint Car drivers...and one of the greatest mines EVER. Kenny invented the CNC machine for heads. And Ricky Weld a very good gaser.

The Welds were one of only a the few that could go to Pa. and win, not many did back in the day. There is so much more, that's why there needs to be a book about them.

Karl Kinser.....one of the most innovative minds ever to work in racing. He built things, didn't go out and buy everything like in the modern era. I often wonder what a pair of men like Smokey Yunick and Karl could have accomplished together.....

Has anyone mentioned "Speedy Bill Smith"? - or is there already a book about him. If you covered his drivers it would be interesting. Jan Opperman to Cheryl Glass.

Of course, anyone who knows me knows I would first vote for a book about Rick Ferkel. I think Bobby Allen would be next. Tears were streaming down my face when he won a WoO show at the Devil's Bowl. Roger Rager would be interesting - especially since he raced in South Africa, Indy and all places in-between.

No one has mentioned Leland McSpadden.

I don't know if any of these have had as interesting a life as Jack Hewitt. One reason I bought "Hewitt's Law" was because I knew so many of the guys he talked about in the book. It turned out to be more interesting than I imagined.

And as someone mentioned - there could never be as interesting a driver and character as Hooker Hood.

I could tell some stories about a lot of these guys. Roger Rager leading the Western World and breaking - and saying something like "no one will ever remember me leading this - they'll only remember who won"... and that might have been the time Rick Ferkel won with a "humper" - and those folks had never seen anything like that.

But it's the off track stories that make these guys interesting and more personable. That's part of what I missed in Kenny Schrader's book "Born to Race" - but then, maybe I know too many stories. Neat guy, for sure. Joyce did a great job with that book, however. So much to pull from.

And then - there's the Jan Opperman books where he took a tape recorder with him and just talked...

Sorry - I truly don't remember seeing this thread before. I got too engrossed in the idea. Please forgive me for such a long post.

Carol, it has been a long time since I've heard anyone speak about a "humper." How well I remember running them. I guess we might be dating ourselves here. Think??

A book On Bob Weikert would be a good read also.

I think a book on Van May would make for some great reading.  He's a great guy to talk to in person, oh the stories are awesome.  I seen him a couple years ago in Eldora keep a group of us hanging out at the Dingus Bus occupied for over an hour just talking about the past.

2 others that would be interesting reading: Kenny Weld and Steve Smith.

Casey Luna Ford Racing or the Steve and Sammy Show.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Steve Kinser-Rick Ferkel-Charlie Swartz-Shane Carson-Danny Smith-Bobby Allen-Larry Moore- and I would like to see one about Charlie Swartz's dad Audie. I would like to see a book about an Dayton, Ohio racer by the name of Charlie or Chuck Brown. He has driven or owned alot of Super Modifieds and Sprint Cars

Roger Rager. You'll never find a more interesting personality in all of racing. The stories he can tell are nothing short of amazing.

Exactly!
