How about an outlaw book. Have chapters about the real outlaws like Rick Ferkel, Bobby Allen, Kenny Weld, Opperman, Sammy, Kinser and many others. I for one would enjoy Dave's tkae on this cast of characters.

Karl Kinser

Imagine the tales that man could tell.

Karl is the most logical choice for a book, IF you could get him to open up about everything...

I agree with the guy about Larry Moore. Do a dirt late model guy that raced 7 nights a week thru the 1970's. Moore, Ed Sanger, Curt Hansen, Mike Duvall, Doug Kenimer or a few others that ran 120-150 shows per year would be a great read. Pavement about Dick Trickle, Tom Reffner or any of those Wisconsin guys that ran 7 nights a week in the '70's would be great too.

Sanger is a good story...local dirt track racer makes it all the way to the Cup series and then comes home again. One of those guys that when they start storytelling, you shut up and listen.

Has anyone mentioned "Speedy Bill Smith"? - or is there already a book about him. If you covered his drivers it would be interesting. Jan Opperman to Cheryl Glass.

Of course, anyone who knows me knows I would first vote for a book about Rick Ferkel. I think Bobby Allen would be next. Tears were streaming down my face when he won a WoO show at the Devil's Bowl. Roger Rager would be interesting - especially since he raced in South Africa, Indy and all places in-between.

No one has mentioned Leland McSpadden.

I don't know if any of these have had as interesting a life as Jack Hewitt. One reason I bought "Hewitt's Law" was because I knew so many of the guys he talked about in the book. It turned out to be more interesting than I imagined.

And as someone mentioned - there could never be as interesting a driver and character as Hooker Hood.

I could tell some stories about a lot of these guys. Roger Rager leading the Western World and breaking - and saying something like "no one will ever remember me leading this - they'll only remember who won"... and that might have been the time Rick Ferkel won with a "humper" - and those folks had never seen anything like that.

But it's the off track stories that make these guys interesting and more personable. That's part of what I missed in Kenny Schrader's book "Born to Race" - but then, maybe I know too many stories. Neat guy, for sure. Joyce did a great job with that book, however. So much to pull from.

And then - there's the Jan Opperman books where he took a tape recorder with him and just talked...

Sorry - I truly don't remember seeing this thread before. I got too engrossed in the idea. Please forgive me for such a long post.

I missed out on the Brad Doty book Still Wide Open. Does anyone know where I could buy one, or would someone trust me to read it and get it back to them??? Email me if you could. [email protected].

Karl Kinser would be my pick if a book would be done now, Steve Kinser when the time comes!!

Dang, lots of great suggestions here. Looks like I have a lot of work to do, whew!

I am going to concentrate on the reprint of Still Wide Open and Hewitt's Law in the short term, and I hope to have both books out this summer. After that I really want to do something with the Best of Times series and get some of it in book form. Stay tuned.

Most of all, thank you all for your feedback and for reading my past books. It means a great deal to me and inspires me to keep going. My goal has always been very simple: I want to create the finest books possible, at an affordable price, which can be enjoyed by short track fans of any age.

Dave, the Thanks is to you. You truly do a great job at capturing the essence of what so many of us get great pleasure from as a sport. Keep it up - we'll keep eating up what you produce.

This is an unofficial poll for Dave, asking whom the audience would recommend for his next book.

There will be so many names thrown around, maybe soem will spark some interest for Dave to pursue, as if he doesn't already have multiple choices already. All of his current books, were written on people still with us, meaning above the ground, so keep your suggestions with that in mind.

Some ideas:

-Al Hamilton

-PA Posse as a whole, maybe a paragraph on some popular drivers and parargaphs surrounding the competition in PA (idea sparked from Wolfies book and his mention of his years in the first Beef Mobile) and then some history of the tracks (past & present)

-Knoxville Raceway and the history of the Nationals and museum

-Brent Keading & Family

How about a book like the american scene . Do it on the fans, people who have went out of there way to go to the races. crazy stuff like hitchhike to new jersy for a one night midget race, or drive to tampa for one night at east bay, 1200miles. I am sure there are a bunch of real crazy stories, about the fans, the bus at knoxville or something like that.
