Watched plenty of racing in the 90's as that is what i grew up on and have watched plenty of replays from lap 1 to the end of 80's races thank you. My facts are straight but in thsi topic we are only speaking of opinion which all of us on here pretty much established long ago you do not know the difference in. Which is why I can't believe I am even wasting my time replying to someone like you because you are just that a waste of time. Good for you for not missing a races in both decades. Want a cookie?

Never said Dale never took anyone out, or that he did not earn his reputation. Just seeing some of the spoiled brats today just body slam into people on the restarts, push someone through the corner and having the end of some races get turned into a demo glorified demo derby which is why I stopped watching it from start to finish a number of years ago. You even have the drivers from the 80's & 90's (Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Waltrip's, Petty's, Skinner, Jarrett's, etc) talk about how there is no etiquette on the track now like there use to be when they drove and if you raced someone like a donkey was when you got dumped. So I will take the word of the drivers who actually raced and know what it was like since their credentials are a little better over someone on a forum who throws a fit everytime someone does not agree with him. Again, yes rough driver, yes he wrecked people, yes 200 is < 76, but 1959-1979 Nascar racing was different than 1980-2000 Nascar racing for many reasons. You can believe whatever you want to believe on who the better driver was of all time but I'm not really picking one over the other due to them racing in different eras. Believe what you want to believe and I'll do the same and move on

If I had a quarter evertime Dale Sr hit someone and knocked them out of the way in those two decades I would be approaching enough money that I could retire on.  That is a fact!!

Dale Sr was one of those spoiled brats.  Thank god for Terry lebonte, Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace, Darrell waltrip, Cale Yarborough Bobby Allison, Ricky Rudd, Lake Speed, Kyle Petty, The King, Harry Gant, Jeff Gordon, exc. To bring the good out in Nascar!!

Ok, just going off the 676 Cup races Dale raced in, and assuming he took out all of the other 42 drivers in the field in each race, this would be 28,392 total knock outs.  x 25 cents a piece, this would be $7098.  This is the maximum you could make.

Can you please give me your retirement investment formula!!!!!!!   I have been doing it all wrong apparently!

(You did say it was a fact)   wink

There wasn't a bumper he didn't like to hit.  Everybody was game in his eyes.  He sometimes hit multiple drivers in one race.  But don't touch him or he would cry right on the air.....just watch the replay....he cried every time  someone paid him back for taking them out.  He was the dirtiest driver in Nascar history.....

Lets say 25 cents times take out ten drivers per race times 36 races per year times 20 years = $1800. Have a happy retirement.

Not a big Jeremy Mayfield fan BUT I remember laughing my butt off the day he "rattled Dale's cage" at Pocono...............mocking Dale for his remarks after wiping Terry L. out at Bristol and thinking it was okay because he didn't mean it.  Smile

For the most part, Dale was able to make these moves by just rubbing a little paint off of the bumper.  I know Darrell at North Wilksboro and Terry L. slamming the wall at Bristol (and winning) and a dust-up here and there with just as bullheaded Ricky Rudd are images we have in mind, but Dale was pretty sly and for the most part, the overwhelming majority of the contact he initiated was subtle and annoying at worst.  He was the master at moving you 5 feet up the track.  What Nick is referring to I believe, is the stuff Harvick did a couple of weeks ago and the wrecking of equipment after the race is over.  He generally did not do the blatant crybaby stuff with the cars post race.   He handed out more paint than Sherwinn Williams, sure.  But he was calculated.  He whined to the camera quite a bit.  I can't remember him having a Cole Trickle "change my tires" moment however.

i hated mayfield after that.  it was the closest i ever came to seeing earnhardt win a race.

i'm going to say the obvious here that all these guys were good in their own way.  it's hard to compare guys like johnson, gordon, petty, and earnhardt.  i was an earnhardt fan growing up...but wasn't old enough to judge what he did and he was a bit tamer in the years i remember best (mostly the mid to late 90s) outside of wrecking labonte at bristol.

i put stewart into the conversations about the best because of what he did on dirt and racing an indy car...so i'll put larson in the mix for at least the greatest single season.  i wonder what his long term goals are...and we'll see how long he can sustain it.

Bingo on all accounts! Yeah he rubbed and traded paint with plenty of people but he was not the only one. Rust, Ernie, the Bodines, Rudd, etc all did the same thing. However probably outside of the Dale & DW incident at Richmond in 86, a majority of things that happened with all drivers back then were in the process of making a pass or a tap to try to move a driver such as the DW & Rusty All Star moment. None of those guys Dale Earnhardt included did not have anything near the likes of what Kyle Busch did to Ron Hornaday in the truck race at Texas, or even the Kyle Busch Kyle Larson ending at Chicago, Keselowski body slamming Gordon at Texas, Lagano and Hamlin in California which broke Hamlin's back, Kenseth Logano, Harvick and Busch at Martinsville last year, Hamlin a couple weeks ago, John Hunter Nemechick's truck incident at the road course, insert any restrictor plate race in the past 5-10yrs one of which almost killed Ryan Newman.  There are several more but those are the ones just off of the top of my head.

Earnhardt definately gave out more than he received but there is no doubt he was and is one of the greatest ever and the greatest of his era. The discussion of greatest ever in any sport is always debatable due to the evolution of the sport and everyone will always have an opinion on what makes the greatest ever. You can try to add all the analytics to something you want but unless they competed at the same level at the sametime and really Petty, Gordon, Earnhardt never competed against each other while the others were in their prime. Its fun to have the discussion though

For a bunch of guys who don't like NASCAR, you sure know a lot about it!

I stopped watching not long after the Fireball Roberts era, when Pontiacs ruled & the cars were based on something people could actually buy at the local car lot....

I was gonna tape it but forgot....post race celebration was all i saw

But WAY TO GO LARSON! Smile

I didn't know races were on tv during the Fireball Roberts days. My grandpa use to tell me there was a show for about 30mins that would give updates for races but it depended on where you lived.

Growing up I was a huge Nascar fanatic. Cup, Busch then when the trucks came around would watch them too. We didn't have cable but a guy my dad worked with would always record the races for me to watch. When we got cable I would watch all forms. My joy for Nascar started to lessen when the COT came out. Tried to continue to watch but between that and the championship format, the racing kept getting worst. I don't think I watched a race 2018-mid 2020. Took my son to his first Nascar race this year at Michigan. While it was not the greatest race experience I'll say the racing was better than it was the last time I was there in 2010 & 2011.

Larson is the main reason I follow it now

I agree:  "Simply the Best", just plain incredible what he's done past two years in all the different types of cars.  No one in the the history of motorsports has ever done anything close.  I don't think.  3500 pound stock cars to thousand pound midgets and everything in between and the surface didn't matter.

I understand the discussion about Larson on this site, but I do not understand how we are getting all of these other TRASHCAR posts on a sprint car site.  The only thing good about this series besides Larson is, "Let's Go Brandon"!

Wow!  You're old.   I remember my great-grandfather telling me about Fireball.  wink

Nascar was my Sunday pastime for 20 years.  So, I do have a lot of very strong memories.  Then, a buddy of mine took me to my first Knoxville Nationals in 2002.  I had been to a few winged sprint car races here and there, but was blown away that weekend.  I have not missed a Nationals since, have seen quite a few All-Star, Outlaw, and IRA shows, and have not been back to a Nascar track since.  I still followed, and watched for a few years after 2002, but my interest just plummeted with the introduction of the COT and races with virtually no passing or close racing.  I watched very few races from the mid-2000's until Kyle got a full time ride.  After 10-15 years of ridiculout moves, Nascar seemed to finally get a few things, and made some improvements to the racing.  I hate the method of crowning the champion.  However, I am one of the few it seems that think the stages idea was a great one.  I'm used to breaks in the action at night with qualifying, heats, Last-chance races, and a feature.  So, I treat these stages almost like that as it gives everyone time to work on the cars and gets the cars back to racing.

Anyways, the racing has improved and we have someone to root for against the spoiled cry-baby brats that litter the top levels of professions of racing.

Question?  Sprint car fans shouldn't talk about a series one of our sprint car guys just won, but it's okay on a sprint car forum to mention politics?  Ok.  Gotcha.  Not hypocritical at all.  (by the way, this in no way means I oppose nor support your statement on Brandon)  wink

Remember not too long ago, when people thought Kyle Larson was overated and got the nickname Yung Money? He was starting to dominate in California racing mostly sprint cars and people said "well he is only good in CA." Boy did he prove everyone wrong! Well, all of us local CA fans knew how good he was and he sure went onto do great things. Super proud of our guy and excited he will be racing soon in CA in his midget.  Smile

Looking forward to the new Golden State King of the
West series schedule!

Winged sprintcars = the fastest and most exciting
racecars on dirt!

That's not very sensitive calling him this name.

Yepper, Kyle will be back to racing a midget again and I'm more than happy to watch him and the rest of the competitors. I just can't follow napcar anymore like I did in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's I don't really follow indycar anymore except for the 500. You guys in Cali have it pretty good with some of your racing, sure is a lot of talent out there, Corey Day seems like he is a rising star. I'm hoping to visit out there for at least a week of racing sometime hopefully before your state slides into the ocean from an earthquake.lol.
