It's funny, Dave Swindell had the opportunity to bring the ASCS engine rules to the Central Valley of California ten years ago and chose not to because he had such a disdain for Richard Harvey. When Dave put out he was going with the ASCS head rule I went to the track office and asked Dave personally if we had the ASCS heads did we have to run the ASCS gaskets, and he said no. The whole purpose for running the ASCS heads was to even the playing field. Those that buy the ASCS heads will not be restricted twice by having to run the gaskets. So Richard bought a set for the new engine he was building to put in Richard Jr's car. As soon as Dave found out what Richard was doing he changed his rule in mid stride. Naturally, Richard Sr lost his mind. Those two were like tieing two cats together by their tails and throwing them over a clothes line. It was a show! Richard then said to hell with him, I'll just compress the $hit outa the dual restricted air I can get in the cylenders. That engine was a compression monster to say the least. Justyn Hamblin's dad should remember this engine as he would come over to the Stinger Chassis shop whenever he heard us fire the car off just to listen to it run. It made about 5 hot laps at the first race of the season and boom that engine was all over. The rest of the ASCS engine rule war on the West Coast is history.

Chris

Here is the Cival War Tire rule for 2010

A. Right rear Hoosier Racing Tires, stamped SC15, SC25.

B. Left rear Hoosier Racing Tires, stamped D10, RD12 or D12.

Most tracks run this compound Or the ASCS Med or Hard up in Oregon and Washington.

When Cottage Grove, OR started the Nonwing Track series this year it was to be ASCS Med, SC 25 Right Rear only. If you ran ASCS wing car you just ran the Med If you were a Nonwing only series car you ran the SC 25.

Here is Part of the Grove Nonwing National I videoed 09/25/10

Chris, as a former racer, I think you are doing everything you can. Car Counts are just plan down. I know of several racers who are now spectators. I love what you have done and would have loved to run your series. Maybe some day I will get the oppurtuntiy to drive again. Good luck to you and your series.

You have to build the fan base up. Stop traveling around so much. Pick a home track and run there. Run the same weekends every month ( 1 and 3rd saturday ). Once people start to see they can see good racing they will come. It will save the teams money and allow them to either bank or roll the money back into the cars. The benefit of that will show on the track. After you see an increase in the fans go and do some traveling.

Do things to draw the fans in. Give tickets away to the elementry schools and middle schools. Ask the quarter midget and kart clubs to come out and display to help get more kids involved is racing so the fan base grows.

Id like to think equal rules thru the state would be nice but REALLY lets not kid ourselves that wont ever happen. Set yourself a nice rule book and leave it. By doing that you wont piss of the racers. Tech equally and open up the tire rule. Your not going to stop people from buying tires if they have the money but you paint the majority of the teams into a corner if they cant figure out the tire set up. Its all about the product for the fans....

I was having this talk last weekend. Someone one needs to ask Ron Shuman how he made SCRA what it became. Ever since the real SCRA left sprint car racing has gone down hill. That is no way a knock on ANY other sanctioning body or 360/410 deal.

The biggest thing that needs to happen is promoter/track owners/car owners need to band together before its to late.

Thanks,

I think the PAS should of had the 360's run Fri and Sat at the Ovals this year. I think that would of made a hell of a show and probably would get more cars. As of Yesterday, there were only 23 cars entered in the Ovals.

I am curious to know what the difference is between the sanctioning bodies USAC/ASCS i already know one is a predominantly 360 and the other is 410 but majority of the tracks in Wash, Oreg, Calif, and AZ run 360's and ASCS is moving into Ca so what is the point fund like, the purse structure. What does ASCS offer that Usac doesn't. If you can get 80 cars signed in for the Trophy Cup and only about 30 to 40 Cars for the Ovals, and then over 100 Cars for the Western, Maybe the PAS should have some big 360 shows throughout the year with a decent purse. Just Opinions.

Does anyone on here think I should respond to KennyPowers? If not i will just keep concentrating on the real feedback, not some made up name that doesnt have a car and obviously by reading his posts, doesnt have any facts right.

Doug dont sweat it. Everytime i use the internet to get racers input and try and make things better, some Moron always has to hide behind a fake name and say dumb stuff.

Thank you Race88, Rod, RandyS and SCRA#97 for the positive feed back. Maybe I am just hard to please. The goal is big fields of cars and great racing!

RandyS, I thought maybe you stopped coming to Santa Maria because I changed my pit pass rule to 48" tall. Dont worry, I think you'll make it! (sorry, couldn't resist. lol)

Chris,

You asked for feed back on the year looking back. First I want to thank You for being a great First year promotor and sticking your neck out financially to head up the West Coast Sprint Car Series. Many times I have had questions regarding rules or policy. You and Doug both got back to me with the answer and I appreciate that. I can't say that for other promotors over the years. Doug made some calls this year that were tough but his job. The tire rule in Tulare I was standing 5 feet away by accident when the call was made. The call was correct and I have the highest respect for the driver of the car and he is a all around good guy. I have Never heard him bad mouth the call. The reason we run the West Coast Series is we are a very limited funded team and if the the rules are not enforced whether it is weight, safety on track or pits, fuel, engine rules, or others then it just becomes a outlaw series and the car count will go down.

Teams like ours will be pulling out and going to another series if rules are not enforced. Doug made a call in Hanford and I did not like it, but I knew it was correct and I had to agree with him. I like the old rule, I don't how a track or official screws us as long as he screws us equal. I sponsor my son, Chris Ennis, and it is not always about money but money definitely helps. To our team it is about the love of racing.

For me is about getting to spend a quality time with my son. NO, I do not hide under any internet name. My name is Allen Ennis and we run the 86 car. We had a great year despite having some engine problems and being our first year learning how to set up a sprint car. What a great purse at Tulare, thanks to Steve Faria and his sponsors. I was expecting 30-40 cars. We unfornately did not make the show. But only 16 cars I am lost. If you look it was about 90 per cent of the top 10-15 in points. We have to ask the drivers and teams that do not make over 75 % of the shows in our series . We had 54 different drivers run the series this first year. Less than 30 percent came to Tulare.

The other reason we run the West Coast Series is the teams and drivers involved. They are a quality group of professionals. Being our first year we had mechanical problems and we had numerous times drivers or teams offer us parts to to get our car in the show. Danny Faria, Rusty Carlise, Wes Guterriez, Peter Murphy, the Tarlton team, Hamblin, Koen Shaw, Matt Day, either gave us parts or came to our pits and offered when they knew we woud not possibly make the program. I want to thank each and every team and driver and any I missed for making Team Ennis have a super year, Especially Danny Faria and Rusty for going out of their way to do it. My son said it best. He said, Did you notice the sprint guys want you in the race to beat you and other classses hope you dont make the program. Sprint car drivers and teams are a different breed than classes we ran before.

There are only 3 things that make racing successful and that being Owner/drivers, promotor and the track, and spectators to pay the bills. As the first year I felt Chris and Doug did a great job. Regarding the low car count I think the economy took its toll on sponsors and teams, We are a traveling series and Ventura is not. They are going to enjoy a higher car count because it is week in and week out same place, same officials, same track preparation, and limited cost to get the track for the majority of the teams. Better track preparation at some tracks might bring back teams that feel the track is not prepped to go a full evening with the sprints. Tech each night of each race will bring more of the lower tier teams and keep the top tier teams playing by the rules of the series. Try to work out a schedule (If possible) where different tracks run different weekends. $ or 5 times this year we wanted to run a track and could not because the 2 or 3 tracks same weekend then both went dark.

sorry for such a long post.

Allen

The very best post of the entire thread. Mr. Ennis is a class act. Good luck to you and your son in all future sprint car racing opportunities.

For the Northwest, Washington and Oregon.

http://www.ascsnorthwest.com/

The Nonwing races in the Northwest ODSS, NWWT are open comp, Open tire, any 23 degree head 360. ODSS Oregon DoubleShot Series NWWT NorthWest Wingless Tour. Both Series ran with Midgets last year but Midgets are moving over to run as WMRA dirt series for 2011. WMRA Wahington Midget Racing Association.

Trophy Cup WINGED? Oval National Nonwing?

From the 2010 Civil War rules

Minimum weight 1525lbs with the driver fully suited in the car at any time. Before, during orafter the racing event. ASCS head motor 1475lbs with the driver fully suited in the car at any time. ASCS Motor easy to check and Med tires also. Open comp motor and tire set Hard compound.

What does ASCS offer and USAC doesn't Winged and Nonwing racing Most drivers don't like running Nonwing. When a track runs Nonwing up in Washington and Oregon there are 8 to 10 cars that take the wings off others don't run just watch or stay home.

Yes Jeff, I would like to have a photo or 2. Make you that much easier to spot the first time you come to Kings or Tulare.

Chris and I both had a great year racing, meeting new friends, and enjoying our time at the tracks with different teams. Get back out there we may need some more tape or other parts.
