That discussion was about cars being more equal on a dry slick track. And I do disagree with that. But all cars are faster than they were and if you look back the qualifying times are tighter throughout the fields today than they were years ago. I think last year on one of the nights at the Nationals there was only about a one second gap from quick time to slowest time. Back in the '80's and '90's I think gaps were as much as 2.5 seconds a lot of years from top to bottom. It did get tougher to transfer from the fifth row. Split hairs if you like on my statements, but my thoughts are that just because all the cars are faster today, that doesn't make them equal. Money still seperates the top performers from the rest.

I agree the cars are closer today. I was just seeking clarification of your statement from the previous week.

Both points (safety and tougher to transfer with cars so equal) are valid. The link below is highlights from Wed night of the 2008 Nationals... the last year the invert was 10. Skip ahead to 1:04 for the start of heat #4. Carl Wilson (who timed in 49th and started on the pole of the heat), lost it going into one, Doug Esh had nowhere to go, drilled him, and all hell broke loose. The tornado of carnage is seldom seen, and it's amazing nobody was hurt. Next year, the invert went to 8 and has been there ever since. That night (Wed in 2008), QT was 14.897 and Carl Wilson's 49th quick lap was 16.415... or a second and a half slower. Some years it's closer to around a second difference... really just depends. If Carl Wilson didn't take out most of the field in '08, maybe the full invert lasts a little while longer... guess we'll never know!? I wasn't happy when they changed it 'cause nostalgia and all that... but am ok with where it's at being 8. That said, they'd better keep it where it's at for a long time.

I fully agree. Carl Wilson is the reason of the 8 car invert. i remember telling two rookie race fans that would be the end of the car Best races. While I can see the reasoning I long for the 10 car invert again. I fully agree that the 8 car invert better be around for a long time!

I've always had a crush on Kendra Jacobs..

And, turn4guy and many others have likely forgotten, the Jacobs sisters were really good softball players too.

Yeah doesn't surprise me. Reason I brought it up, is because this is a Knoxville thread and she's kicking some serious ass out there. Makes her even more attractive imo. We could use someone like her in Central pa right now.

The problem Now comes down to, with the cars being so equal, everyone runs about the same speed. I will agree that there could be up to 1 second gap from QT to 40th quick, however, when someone slower is out front, they also have the advantage of clean air, and prefered line. That is what makes it harder to move forward, even if someone is faster, the may not have the preferred line and are running in another cars dirty air. There are some who can make it work, but at a big speed place, everyone runs about the same speed unless the track slicks off. Knoxville is pretty good about prepping the track to avoid this, but it still happens.

The heat races at the Nationals the last few years have been nothing short of fantastic.
"makes it harder to move forward" ---this is what most of us want. This is the biggest stage for these drivers every year. Why would we want to make it easier?
I think the format with the 8 car invert is perfect. Please Knoxville, don't ever change it!!

I never one time said that there was an issue with the way knoxville does it, and never once said or implied that "It should be easier". Knoxville has an advantage with the track prep and the configuration, big, wide, and sweeping. That, along with sheer determination and grit of it being the biggest race of the year, is why we see the great races. Its the Knoxville Nationals so it should be hard to get a top score. My statement was in general, not in any way directed towards Knoxville Specifically.
I guess basically, I shouldn't have said "problem", and I maybe could have worded it differently. I like the way it is, with the cars more equal and someone should have to race his ass off to make it to the top 4. I wasnt around at that time, but I feel like it is better than having a steve kinser who was 2 seconds faster than everyone running 10th to first every year. (Dont know how many times that has happened, but it is a fair example lol) It is nice to see a Donny or Stewart in the B on their prelim night, and run it up to 5th in the A. I like that kind of racing.

Absolutely. While years ago we enjoyed watching our favorites go to the front from the back, it seemed a little more nerve racking. Maybe that was just because it was last row. That sometimes made for great entertainment, like the year Steve Kinser went from the the back to the front coming out of turn two on the initial start, while driving up over the cushion. On the otherside of the coin was 1990 when Wolfgang was taken out on the front stretch at the very start of his heat. Does starting in the fourth row create less urgency for the drivers than starting in the last row? Would be interesting to see what the drivers that did both think about that.

Tyler Walker has done the back row to the front row heat race finish at the Nationals, I'm pretty sure Sammy has too. Sure was fun to watch. The year Tyler did it he was bouncing off of the turn 2 wall all night until I think it finally took him out.

I agree with your final statement with seeing some of the big dogs work through the B. I wasn't trying to trash your post either, just giving my opinion.
And, you are absolutely correct, it is harder now to get through the heats. I actually think the balance is about perfect IMO. There are two times during the entire year you can put your money on Donny going elbows up: 1. Heat race during qualifying night at Knoxville Nationals 2. Saturday night at Knoxville Nationals That says a ton about the heat races during the Nationals.

Over the years there were many times the top dogs went from the back row to win the heats. I only touched on a couple that stood out. A year or two after Kinser went over the cushion on the start to go to the front in turns one and two, he tried the same move and ended up pretty high in the air .....landed on all four wheels but broke a shock mount. In Karl Kinser fashion he used good old durable duct tape in the work area and wrapped everything together ....shock, axle and frame like a sprained ankle and Steve went on to finish second in the heat. His car was bucking and bouncing all over the place! An aquantance of mine south of Knoxville has (had) that axle hanging in his shop.....duct tape still hanging on it.
